UBS is out-hustling independent RIAs

PWD's 30-day tracking shows UBS logged 160 market events, nearly 40% more than the nearest independent aggregator.

A Swiss bank is the busiest firm in U.S. wealth management this month, and not by a little: PWD's 30-day tracking logged 160 market events for UBS—advisor moves, deal announcements, closings, launches, openings—nearly 40 percent more than the 114 logged by Merit Financial Advisors, the closest independent aggregator.

The chase pack runs from OneDigital's 97 events to OpenArc Corporate Advisory's 88 and Farther's 83—independent names that dominate RIA M&A headlines, all present and all running behind a wirehouse on the activity tape.

The same 30-day window logged 966 advisor moves and 99 team liftouts, but only 11 breakaways—a gap that says the talent is cycling between platforms that already exist rather than breaking away, and the employee channel is where the recruiting war is being won. Around that churn, the window also counted 613 deal announcements and 231 closings, 222 executive changes, 177 fund launches, and 85 changes in reported assets under management.

The mix inside UBS's 160 events is not broken out, but the industry-wide tally brackets it: with only 11 breakaways across the entire space, a 160-event month for the wirehouse implies hiring, acquisitions, and internal movement, rather than defections. Independent aggregators, for all their M&A press, are not matching that breadth, and no other firm is close.

The advisor with a book of business keeps moving, but the destination has changed. Hanging a shingle now competes with moving one desk over, and this month that desk is disproportionately at UBS. The tell next month will be whether the breakaway count—stuck at 11—moves at all.
