Focus Financial Partners hires Nevis to unify data across its 90 RIAs

The Oct. 15 deal hands integration work to a startup founded in 2024 whose CEO, Mark Swan, was an Amazon intern in 2020.

Focus Financial Partners has hired Nevis, a 2024-founded AI startup, to rebuild workflows and data-sharing across the 90 RIAs it owns, according to RIABiz. The deal was announced Oct. 15; the coverage gives no contract value or term.

Focus, which RIABiz describes as a New York City roll-up managing $500 billion, has consolidated 40 of those 90 firms under the Focus Partners brand. Focus claims a three-year effort to clean up and unify its data, the same report says.

Focus CEO Adam Biernbaum, as RIABiz relays it, says Focus is buying a process rather than a product. Applying 'pre-designed AI capabilities onto existing processes,' he argued, is a losing game.

Integration without migration

Tim Welsh, founder and CEO of Nexus Strategy, told RIABiz: "A roll-up is a data integration problem disguised as a wealth firm. Every acquisition adds systems, and headcount can't keep up."

Welsh said Nevis "sits on top of that mess instead of forcing a migration," and is "the right kind of tool now for the basics — onboarding, account opening, reconciliation." His premise is that Focus and rival ALTi Global "ultimately make up dozens of firms on different systems." PWD's Oct. 20 coverage of the rollout put the first work in account opening and onboarding across Focus units.

His caveat: "AI doesn't integrate a roll-up. You still need that foundation data-layer." Welsh's point is that a layer above the stack can shorten the distance between systems without reducing how many exist. Nevis alone, he said, is insufficient to solve the fragmentation that comes from keeping acquired firms separate.

Our October coverage of Alaris CEO Allen Darby reported his view that AI integration costs will cut RIA sale multiples. Focus's bet is that paying a startup to build the integration layer lowers the cost of each firm it absorbs.

A 2024 startup led by Mark Swan

RIABiz's columnist framed the selection as a skip of IBM, McKinsey, Accenture and Booz Allen in favor of a firm Focus could 'do a startup together' with. Mark Swan is 27 and was an Amazon intern in 2020; Nevis has two co-founders and dates from 2024.
