Russian strike disables GigaCenter's only Kyiv data center

The Oct. 20 strike shut the 2014 Tier III site, which has capacity for about 300 racks; sister firm GigaCloud says client services continue on backup sites in Ukraine and the EU.

At a glance

  1. Its website was offline when Data Center Dynamics reported the strike.
  2. The 1,200 sqm facility, built to Tier III standards, opened in 2014 with 550 sqm of IT whitespace and capacity for around 300 racks.
  3. GigaCloud said the strike damaged one of the data centers hosting its cloud services, and client services continued on backup sites in Ukraine and the EU.

A Russian strike on Oct. 20 critically damaged GigaCenter's only Kyiv data center and forced it to stop work indefinitely, the company said in a social media post. Its website was offline when Data Center Dynamics reported the strike.

The 1,200 sqm facility, built to Tier III standards, opened in 2014 with 550 sqm of IT whitespace and capacity for around 300 racks. Some online listings place it at Vasylkivska St, 37B, in the southwest of the city, according to Data Center Dynamics.

GigaCloud said the strike damaged one of the data centers hosting its cloud services, and client services continued on backup sites in Ukraine and the EU. It did not identify the site. GigaCloud lists five EU data centers and colocation with Equinix in Warsaw, Atman and Talex. GigaTrans, the group's telco, said one root node of its network was damaged but that services continue in full through geographic redundancy, and that its employees were uninjured. All three sit under GigaGroup, founded in 2006.

The GigaCenter strike is the second Kyiv outage this month: Dline.ua's facility went offline after a Russian strike. Customer data was moved to backup sites whose location the report did not give. The same reporting notes Ukrainian drone strikes on telecom facilities in Russian-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk, operated by Ugletelecom and Lugacom.
