Plan advisers get an AI research tool with a source trail

Morningstar's PitchBook integration with Google's Gemini puts attributable data in front of plan fiduciaries.

At a glance

  1. Morningstar said Tuesday it is integrating PitchBook into Google Cloud's newly released Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services platform, putting its independent ratings and private capital markets intelligence directly inside Google's enterprise AI workflow.
  2. PitchBook will be blended into Gemini using Model Context Protocol, an open-source system created by Anthropic.
  3. AI use in retirement planning is growing, but the brakes have been the industry's need to verify what a model says and attribute where it came from — exactly the limitation this integration addresses.

Retirement plan advisers who want AI answers they can actually cite just got a serious option. Morningstar said Tuesday it is integrating PitchBook into Google Cloud's newly released Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services platform, putting its independent ratings and private capital markets intelligence directly inside Google's enterprise AI workflow. The pitch is that users can ask harder questions and get answers grounded in Morningstar and PitchBook research, with the sources attached.

PitchBook will be blended into Gemini using Model Context Protocol, an open-source system created by Anthropic. Eligible Google Gemini subscribers will have access to Morningstar's independent ratings and research across public and private markets, including PitchBook data on transactions and private capital activity. That gives plan advisers one tool spanning the two halves of the menu-monitoring problem: public fund research and private market diligence.

AI use in retirement planning is growing, but the brakes have been the industry's need to verify what a model says and attribute where it came from — exactly the limitation this integration addresses. Seth Sprinkle, Morningstar's global head of AI platforms strategy and partnerships, says AI's value rests on the quality of the information it uses, and the goal is transparency in the sources behind the answers. Tom Van Buskirk, PitchBook's EVP of technology and engineering, argues the combination of PitchBook's AI tools and human insight gives Google's enterprise AI more verifiable grounding.

For a plan fiduciary, the line between a prediction and a documented research step is the source trail. With this integration, an adviser monitoring a plan's investment menu can ask questions in natural language and get answers backed by Morningstar's ratings and PitchBook's transaction data, then point a plan committee to the underlying information. That matters even more in private markets, where PitchBook's capital-activity data offers a way to check a fund's operating story against something other than the sponsor's materials. It runs alongside the back-office friction this publication has documented in IRA private-market deals.

None of this replaces an adviser's judgment, and the strategic question is whether Morningstar's independence survives contact with Google's platform. The credibility of a Morningstar report is the asset being rented, and the answers will be judged by how easily a plan committee can trace them. For now, the useful product is the receipt.
