Brazil's CSD BR mirrors BTG Pactual fund records on the XRP Ledger

The depository keeps its own database as the legal record and publishes a blockchain copy that approved banks and companies can reconcile in near real time.

At a glance

  1. Working with Ripple, both companies describe the arrangement as a move out of testing and into live operation, though each tokenized share mirrors an entry in CSD BR's own books.
  2. Built on the XRP Ledger's Multi-Purpose Token standard, the tokens let approved banks and companies check the blockchain copy against the official record in near real time.
  3. Brazil's securities regulator, CVM, is taking the other route, planning tokenization tests built on simulated transactions; CSD BR's version is in production because it leaves the legal relationships underneath it untouched.

Brazil's central securities depository is now publishing a second copy of BTG Pactual investment fund share records on the public XRP Ledger. Working with Ripple, both companies describe the arrangement as a move out of testing and into live operation, though each tokenized share mirrors an entry in CSD BR's own books. Those books remain the legal source of ownership. The token is a replica, not the register.

Built on the XRP Ledger's Multi-Purpose Token standard, the tokens let approved banks and companies check the blockchain copy against the official record in near real time. That makes this a reconciliation feed before it is anything else. The announcement does not say whether holders can move the tokens themselves or whether the ledger simply follows changes CSD BR makes to its own database. While it describes the depository's existing powers over the underlying assets, it never addresses who controls the tokens.

That gap decides what kind of thing this is: a mirror that tracks a database creates no transfer of ownership, no settlement obligation and no change to participants' legal responsibilities, which is the argument both companies make for needing no fresh regulatory approval. Brazil's securities regulator, CVM, is taking the other route, planning tokenization tests built on simulated transactions; CSD BR's version is in production because it leaves the legal relationships underneath it untouched.

Fund shares are a tiny part of CSD BR's business, so the live launch establishes a mechanism more than it moves a market. It also places a public copy of depository records—the place where definitive ownership normally lives—one level away from the asset itself. “We chose to start with record mirroring because it is the safest and most responsible way to introduce a new technology into critical market infrastructure,” said Daniel Polano Spreafico, head of products and clients at the depository.

The rail matters less than it looks: the XRP Ledger is also where Ripple is building atomic, all-or-nothing settlement, an upgrade this publication reported has slipped to Oct. 9. Mirroring does not wait on that feature, because a replica of a database carries no leg risk, so the least ambitious use of the ledger is the one least exposed to its shipping schedule. Ripple's ledger has been getting delivery features ahead of the clients it says are coming; CSD BR is a named institution running on it today in the form that asks the least of it.

Whether approved participants can move the tokens themselves remains open, and that line decides whether the project stops at mirroring or turns into a transfer mechanism with custody, settlement and control questions attached. Until it is drawn, the blockchain stays a public audit trail bolted onto a private register; the number to watch is how many approved banks and companies actually query the copy.
