Brazil's CSD BR mirrors BTG Pactual fund records on the XRP Ledger

The regulated depository keeps its own database as the official record and publishes a second copy of fund ownership on a public blockchain.

At a glance

  1. The depository keeps the official record itself; the chain carries a second copy of who owns shares in selected BTG Pactual funds.
  2. A depository holds the official list of who owns which securities.
  3. Under the new arrangement, approved banks and companies can read the blockchain copy directly and check it against CSD BR's database at any moment, rather than comparing their own books after the fact.

CSD BR, the Brazilian market operator whose systems hold more than 22 trillion reais of registered assets, roughly $4 trillion, has begun writing ownership records for investment funds run by BTG Pactual onto the XRP Ledger, according to a release shared with CoinDesk that describes BTG Pactual as Latin America's largest investment bank. The depository keeps the official record itself; the chain carries a second copy of who owns shares in selected BTG Pactual funds.

A depository holds the official list of who owns which securities. When an investor buys into a fund, the depository updates that list while the banks acting for investors keep books of their own, and the two sides check their records against each other, a matching process that is slow and costly and can hold up a trade when the numbers diverge.

Under the new arrangement, approved banks and companies can read the blockchain copy directly and check it against CSD BR's database at any moment, rather than comparing their own books after the fact. Every change on the XRP Ledger is publicly recorded, including any reversal CSD BR makes, so a gap between the two records would be visible to anyone reading the chain.

Nothing registered with CSD BR is being moved: the existing database remains the official record used for registration, custody and settlement, and the assets it holds stay where they are. Fund shares deposited with the depository will also be represented as tokens on XRPL, a second representation of positions that continue to live in the regulated system.

Anyone can read the copy; CSD BR approves who can hold it

The choice of a public network is what separates this from most depository experiments to date, when banks and depositories have tested blockchains open only to invited members. CSD BR has published its copy on a network anyone can read while keeping control of who is allowed to own and transfer the tokens, so readers see the movements and the depository decides who can make them.

Those tokens use the XRP Ledger's Multi-Purpose Token standard, designed for financial assets whose issuers need more control than a cryptocurrency such as XRP provides. CSD BR can restrict who participates and can freeze assets or reverse transactions when a regulator or a court requires it, and participants still pass the usual identity and anti-money-laundering checks.

The project begins with live fund records, according to Ripple and CSD BR, which CoinDesk frames as a step beyond the pilots banks have run for years using test assets or closed networks. The coverage does not say how many BTG Pactual funds are included, what portion of the depository's registered assets the arrangement touches, or when the scope widens.

Founded in 2018 and authorized by both Brazil's central bank and its securities regulator, CSD BR's systems register and maintain positions in securities, derivatives and other financial assets. Brazil's securities regulator has separately set up a task force with a 60-day deadline for a tokenization proposal, according to a related CoinDesk report.

Who owns the register

The tokenized-stock standard will be decided by who owns the register, and CSD BR's arrangement is the mirror image of a register-linked token: the regulated depository keeps the file, and the chain holds a copy. That is a far smaller legal step than a model in which the ledger becomes the record of ownership, because no title, custody or settlement function changes hands. If it holds up, it is a design other depositories can borrow — publish a readable copy, keep the official file, leave the controls with the regulator.

The rail carries a schedule of its own: the XRP Ledger's Batch amendment, the upgrade that brings all-or-nothing settlement, slipped ten days to Oct. 9, a reminder that the ledger's feature dates move at validator speed. The reconciliation copy appears not to inherit that risk, since it is read-and-compare rather than settlement; what it does carry is a permission layer: a reader can see the record without being able to transact in it, because CSD BR approves holders and can freeze or reverse positions.

The public recording cuts both ways. Because reversals appear on the chain, a divergence between CSD BR's database and its blockchain copy would be visible to anyone reading it, corrections included. Whether that transparency is the point of the design or a byproduct of choosing a public ledger over an invited-members network is not stated in the release. It is the part of the arrangement that gets tested first: by a routine correction, a freeze, or a mismatch that shows up on a public chain before anyone has explained it.
