Unum books $853M loss on Fortitude Re LTC asset transfer

Impairments on assets earmarked for the long-term care reinsurance deal pushed Unum to a $419.7 million net loss while group disability missed guidance.

$853MQ3 investment loss, mostly impairments

At a glance

  1. After-tax adjusted operating income, which excludes that loss, fell 27.2% to $349 million from $479.4 million a year earlier, Insurance Business America reported.
  2. For general-account portfolio managers, the impairment is the operative number: it hit net income before the transfer closed, leaving the ceding company exposed to price risk on the transfer basket between signing and closing.
  3. The group disability benefit ratio was 67.1% for the quarter, against the 62% to 64% full-year guidance Unum set at the start of 2026.

Unum Group booked an $853 million investment loss in the third quarter, primarily impairments on assets intended for transfer in its Fortitude Re long-term care reinsurance transaction, driving a $419.7 million net loss.

After-tax adjusted operating income, which excludes that loss, fell 27.2% to $349 million from $479.4 million a year earlier, Insurance Business America reported.

For general-account portfolio managers, the impairment is the operative number: it hit net income before the transfer closed, leaving the ceding company exposed to price risk on the transfer basket between signing and closing. Insurers negotiating similar long-term care reinsurance deals can negotiate whether transfer assets are marked at signing or at closing.

The group disability benefit ratio was 67.1% for the quarter, against the 62% to 64% full-year guidance Unum set at the start of 2026.

Fortitude Re's parent has been expanding its own platform. As Private Wealth Daily previously reported, FGH Parent acquired Dayforward's platform, distribution agreements and licensed agency in September, moving annuity issuance inside Fortitude Re while Dayforward's insurance entities and legacy liabilities stayed outside the deal.

Chief executive Richard McKenney said in the release that "underlying earnings results did fall short of our expectations," citing "elevated claim submissions in group disability." The driver also shifted. The first two quarters were concentrated in short-term disability claims in states with newer paid family and medical leave programs; the third quarter cites higher long-term disability incidence, prior-period pricing actions and larger average claim size. Group disability adjusted operating income fell 60.4% to $94.8 million, and US group disability sales declined 8.5%.

Colonial Life, the workplace voluntary benefits arm, moved the other way. Adjusted operating income rose 35.0% to $169.4 million and its benefit ratio fell to 38.0% from 46.3%, helped by favorable reserve assumption updates and claims experience in cancer, critical illness and life products. Sales grew 6.4%.

Unum has been implementing double-digit price increases on new paid family and medical leave business since the second quarter, and the third-quarter ratio suggests those increases have not yet caught up with claims. The fourth-quarter group disability ratio will show whether long-term disability severity is a single quarter or a run rate, and whether the transfer-related impairments stay confined to the assets in the Fortitude Re basket.
