SWI launches AI cloud unit with 3.6GW of power

The unit will start with 30MW in Cambridge and targets 2.3GW of Nvidia-focused capacity by 2029.

At a glance

  1. Its first large-scale deployment in Cambridge will host close to 7,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs and 3,500 Vera CPUs in Vera Rubin NVL72 racks, Data Center Dynamics first reported.
  2. The first 30MW is about 5% of the planned 530MW Cambridge campus, and the 2.3GW target is more than 70 times the first phase.
  3. SWI said it has finalized contracts with its first customers but did not disclose contract values, customer names or lease terms, leaving utilization and pricing as the key unknowns for allocators underwriting the buildout.

SWI Group on Monday launched SWI Compute, an AI cloud unit supported by 3.6GW of power capacity across 24 sites in the US and Europe, starting with 30MW at a planned Cambridge, UK, campus.

Its first large-scale deployment in Cambridge will host close to 7,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs and 3,500 Vera CPUs in Vera Rubin NVL72 racks, Data Center Dynamics first reported. The first 30MW is expected online by the end of 2027 and is the initial phase of a UK campus planned to reach 530MW. SWI is targeting 2.3GW of Nvidia-focused capacity by 2029.

The first 30MW is about 5% of the planned 530MW Cambridge campus, and the 2.3GW target is more than 70 times the first phase.

SWI said it has finalized contracts with its first customers but did not disclose contract values, customer names or lease terms, leaving utilization and pricing as the key unknowns for allocators underwriting the buildout.

SWI Group, listed on Euronext Amsterdam, reports €11 billion ($12.27 billion) in assets under management, so the approximately $1 billion hardware order is equivalent to about 8% of AUM. Halil Mirakhmedov, CEO of SWI Compute, said the team secured those advanced Nvidia hardware orders after joining the Nvidia Cloud Partner program, and that SWI Group had spent six years acquiring grid access.

SWI Group was formed from the merger of Stoneweg and Icona Capital last year. It took a stake in AiOnX, which has data center projects in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, and said every SWI Compute site will be built to Nvidia reference architectures and DSX AI Factory Platform requirements.
