All Magnificent Seven companies fall short of a 1.5°C climate pathway, Morningstar says

Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft face heightened climate transition risk as operators of hyperscale data centers, Morningstar says

At a glance

  1. Nvidia shows the highest implied temperature alignment at 2.5°C, Meta follows at 2.3°C, and Tesla sits at 1.8°C despite carrying the group's highest climate management score.
  2. The compute behind large-scale AI models means more data centers, higher electricity demand and higher greenhouse gas emissions; absolute emissions across the group have been rising.
  3. Morningstar flags water scarcity, data privacy, cybersecurity, labor management and business ethics as emerging concerns.

All seven Magnificent Seven companies remain misaligned with a 1.5°C climate pathway, according to Morningstar Sustainalytics' Low Carbon Transition Ratings published Oct. 14. Nvidia shows the highest implied temperature alignment at 2.5°C, Meta follows at 2.3°C, and Tesla sits at 1.8°C despite carrying the group's highest climate management score.

Morningstar ties the exposure to the AI buildout: Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft face heightened climate transition risk as operators of hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure. The compute behind large-scale AI models means more data centers, higher electricity demand and higher greenhouse gas emissions; absolute emissions across the group have been rising.

Morningstar flags water scarcity, data privacy, cybersecurity, labor management and business ethics as emerging concerns. Reported Scope 2 emissions — indirect emissions from purchased energy — can vary significantly depending on whether a firm uses market-based or location-based accounting, Morningstar notes.

Morningstar says climate management practices across the group are generally well-developed.
