Raymond James hires Schwab custody veteran for client experience

For advisors weighing hybrid platforms against independent custody, the hire tests whether relationship quality, not payout grids, decides the next platform competition.

At a glance

  1. The next phase of platform competition will be fought over relationship quality, not payout grids.
  2. Davis updated her LinkedIn designation with the new role on Aug. 12, two days after Citywire noted her departure with no destination attached, and in a post to colleagues she marked the boundary warmly: 'After 29 incredible years with Charles Schwab, it's time for a new chapter,' she wrote.
  3. Davis's remit is client experience, not custody oversight, but the sourcing is the same — the pattern suggests Raymond James wants the habits of a custody organization, which depends on trust between partners, distributed through a broker-dealer's hybrid arm.

Raymond James has hired Elyn Davis, a Schwab RIA custody veteran, as senior vice president of client experience, and the assignment tells advisors choosing between an IBD-hybrid platform and independent RIA custody that the firm is importing Schwab Advisor Services' service culture into its hybrid model. The next phase of platform competition will be fought over relationship quality, not payout grids.

Most of her career was spent in Advisor Services, where she partnered with RIAs on strategy, teams, and client experience.

She is the second senior Schwab custody executive to land in Raymond James's leadership: Greg Bruce came over in 2019 and now runs the firm's RIA custody business. Davis's remit is client experience, not custody oversight, but the sourcing is the same — the pattern suggests Raymond James wants the habits of a custody organization, which depends on trust between partners, distributed through a broker-dealer's hybrid arm.

RIABiz frames the hire against pressure from LPL and Cetera on the large broker-dealers to make RIA-hybrid competitive, pressure that has cultural and economic dimensions: RIAs have come to expect a service voice from their platform, while some broker-dealers still sound like counterparties executing a trade. Hiring someone who spent 29 years inside Schwab's advisor business is Raymond James's way of telling hybrid RIAs it understands which language they want to hear.

The hire is only as valuable as the authority behind it: this publication has argued that the platform holding client assets sets the outer limit on what a practice can deliver, and the same test applies inside a hybrid, where back-office seams eat time that advisors could spend on clients. The question for advisors in the market is whether the client experience budget follows Davis into onboarding, technology support, and service response times.

Raymond James has telegraphed its answer: Cetera's enterprise channel has already demonstrated how growth infrastructure determines which firms win teams, so advisors comparing a hybrid home with independence should use Davis's first two quarters as a field test. If the operating experience changes, the economics of the hybrid choice change with it; if it stays a title, the next recruiting conversation will do the talking.
