Qualitas Energy secures $286M for Chilean renewables

The nonrecourse financing covers an operating hydro group and 193 megawatts of solar and wind under construction for 2028 completion.

$286MNonrecourse financing for Qualitas's Chilean portfolio

At a glance

  1. The package combines refinancing of operating plants with construction debt under Qualitas Energy Fund V.
  2. The portfolio holds eight assets and 259 megawatts of generation capacity plus 840 megawatt-hours of battery storage.
  3. For allocators underwriting Fund V, the package ties 193 of the 259 megawatts—the solar and wind capacity—to a 2028 completion schedule, while the 66 megawatts of hydro already run.

Qualitas Energy secured $286 million of nonrecourse financing covering its entire Chilean renewable portfolio, IREI reported Nov. 2.

The package combines refinancing of operating plants with construction debt under Qualitas Energy Fund V.

The portfolio holds eight assets and 259 megawatts of generation capacity plus 840 megawatt-hours of battery storage. An operating 66-megawatt run-of-river hydro group sits alongside a 154-megawatt peak solar project with 840 megawatt-hours of batteries and 39 megawatts of onshore wind. The solar, storage and wind assets are under construction and expected to reach commercial operation in 2028. Long-term power-purchase agreements with offtake companies support the package.

For allocators underwriting Fund V, the package ties 193 of the 259 megawatts—the solar and wind capacity—to a 2028 completion schedule, while the 66 megawatts of hydro already run. Because the debt is nonrecourse and covers the Chilean portfolio as a whole, the fund's construction exposure and the lenders' repayment rest on those projects reaching operation. The diligence question is how much of the 2028 projects' output the long-term PPAs cover.

Under-construction assets hold 193 of 259 MW
