Prime Capital sells governance to small endowments

Mark Hays, late of Glenmede and Cambridge, gets a platform to build a $5M-$250M nonprofit practice backed by a 70-location RIA.

At a glance

  1. The vehicle is a dedicated practice for endowments and foundations holding $5 million to $250 million, with Mark Hays coming aboard as president, Financial Advisor Magazine reported.
  2. CEO Glenn Spencer describes Hays as the leadership to bring it all together and scale it, and Hays built a mission-aligned platform once at Glenmede, so the methodology exists; PWD's prior coverage of the hire noted Cerulli expects the segment to produce $1.3 trillion in first-time OCIO adoption.
  3. The tactical move fits the broader RIA talent war, where firms like Beacon Pointe, Prime Capital and BridgePort are hiring executives to run the platform, not just bring the book; Prime Capital already has the locations and the back office.

Prime Capital Financial, the Overland Park, Kan.-based hybrid RIA reporting $50 billion in total client assets, is making its move into the nonprofit asset owner by attaching institutional governance to a 70-location distribution machine. The vehicle is a dedicated practice for endowments and foundations holding $5 million to $250 million, with Mark Hays coming aboard as president, Financial Advisor Magazine reported.

Hays joins Prime Capital Endowment & Foundations after nearly two decades in institutional and mission-aligned investing, including close to seven years at Glenmede, where he served as managing director and director of sustainable investing, built the firm's mission-aligned platform, and advised endowments, foundations, families and institutions; before that he worked at Cambridge Associates and J.P. Morgan Asset Management. He remains based in Philadelphia while the practice builds a national offering—investment management, impact strategy and governance support—for family foundations, museums, educational institutions, health-focused foundations and other nonprofit endowments, and Prime Capital says dedicated staff will start this fall with the build-out running into next year.

Many small and mid-sized endowments and foundations are seeking outside expertise and direct access to senior professionals, and at $5 million to $250 million that usually means a large-plan process at a small-plan price—so Prime Capital is effectively making standardized governance the product for that segment.

The tactical move fits the broader RIA talent war, where firms like Beacon Pointe, Prime Capital and BridgePort are hiring executives to run the platform, not just bring the book; Prime Capital already has the locations and the back office. What the release does not disclose is how large a team is planned or whether the practice will carry the cost of impact reporting itself, and those numbers—more than Hays's title—will determine whether this is a business line or a calling card.

The first dedicated hires this fall, not the launch announcement, will show whether Prime Capital has bought itself a practice or bought itself a name.
