Northwestern Mutual launches family office services for clients with at least $50 million net worth

The company says more than 40 in-house specialists will work with its advisors and teams nationwide on legal, tax, investment and legacy planning.

  1. The suite covers legal, tax, investment, banking and lending, philanthropy, legacy planning, risk management, and founder and business planning.
  2. The team, he said, brings "those fractured and fragmented pieces together" by aligning investment, insurance, tax and legacy strategies.
  3. Northwestern Mutual's own 2026 Planning & Progress Study found that 52% of high-net-worth individuals, defined as people with $1 million or more in investable assets, say their financial planning needs improvement.

Northwestern Mutual launched Family Office Services on Sept. 29, an offering aimed at clients with at least $50 million in net worth.

More than 40 in-house specialists will partner with the company's advisors and teams nationwide, according to the announcement. The suite covers legal, tax, investment, banking and lending, philanthropy, legacy planning, risk management, and founder and business planning.

"Many affluent families have strong individual advisors but lack coordination across their full financial picture," said John Roberts, the company's chief field officer, who the release says leads its wealth and investment management business. The team, he said, brings "those fractured and fragmented pieces together" by aligning investment, insurance, tax and legacy strategies.

Northwestern Mutual's own 2026 Planning & Progress Study found that 52% of high-net-worth individuals, defined as people with $1 million or more in investable assets, say their financial planning needs improvement. One in four say they turned to a financial advisor for the first time last year. Because that research is the company's own, it functions as Northwestern Mutual's case for the launch rather than as independent demand data.

The company describes the offering as bringing family office capabilities into its advisor model at scale and as designed for select clients rather than its full book. The release frames it as a service layer inside the advisor model, not a separate advisory business built to court wealthy families directly. More than 40 specialists working across a nationwide advisor force implies a shared-resource arrangement rather than dedicated teams attached to individual client relationships, though the announcement does not detail how the specialists are assigned.

A distribution question more than a build-out

For an insurer-and-advisor platform, the constraint on serving a $50 million client is usually coordination rather than product access. Northwestern Mutual's answer is to make the specialists available to advisors who already hold the relationship, instead of standing up a separate entity and hiring client-facing staff to compete with them.

The pitch also puts the company in the same conversation as the multifamily and single-family offices competing for the same households, and against RIAs that have added family-office services. What the announcement does not say is how many clients the company expects to qualify, what the service costs, or whether it will be offered through advisors outside Northwestern Mutual's own field force. Those are the details that would show whether the offering is a broad capability upgrade or a narrowly targeted tier.
