Mirova natural capital platform tops $1 billion as impact data covers two projects

Mirova's 2025 impact report counts 4.9 million tonnes of CO2e across its carbon portfolio, though reported emissions cover only two projects

At a glance

  1. The platform was established in 2015 and combines investment staff with carbon finance, agronomy and ESG management.
  2. The report puts figures behind the portfolio: 4.9 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in sequestered or avoided emissions across its carbon solutions investments.
  3. Reported emissions impacts currently cover only two conservation projects, with several other investments still in early development.

Mirova's natural capital platform has raised more than $1 billion since inception and supports more than 70 projects globally, according to the firm's 2025 Natural Capital Impact Report, which ESG News reported on 19 October. The platform was established in 2015 and combines investment staff with carbon finance, agronomy and ESG management.

The report puts figures behind the portfolio: 4.9 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in sequestered or avoided emissions across its carbon solutions investments. It also counts roughly 1.1 million hectares restored or conserved, 141,101 beneficiaries and 11,262 jobs created or supported.

Reported emissions impacts currently cover only two conservation projects, with several other investments still in early development. ESG News notes that the gap matters for institutional investors weighing projected environmental benefits against verified outcomes.

More than half of global GDP, about $58 trillion, is moderately or highly dependent on nature, according to research cited in the report. "Nature is not a backdrop to the economy. It is its foundation," Gautier Quéru, Mirova's global head of natural capital, said in the report. "Our responsibility now is to preserve and regenerate it as strategic infrastructure."

Investment activity concentrates on carbon solutions — reforestation, ecosystem conservation, agroforestry and improved land management — and regenerative food systems, with plans to explore European bioeconomy opportunities.

The platform runs ESG due diligence before investment, with contractual Environmental and Social Action Plans addressing identified risks, followed by quarterly monitoring and annual performance reviews. Its carbon integrity framework tests measurability, additionality, permanence, social benefits and biodiversity outcomes. The platform also screens carbon credit buyers, requiring credible decarbonisation commitments rather than reliance on offsets as their primary climate strategy. That demand-side filter narrows the buyer pool for any project's credits.

Mirova's $1 billion natural capital figure is capital raised since inception, not current assets, so it is not directly comparable with the $13.6 billion in regulatory assets reported as of 17 October, per ESG's records.
