Fidelity International launches two equity income UCITS ETFs with call-writing overlays

Each fund pairs Fidelity's fundamental equity research with a rules-based index call-selling strategy and is seeded with USD 5 million from Susquehanna.

At a glance

  1. Each combines an actively managed equity portfolio with a systematic options overlay that sells index call options with the aim of generating additional income, and each is seeded with USD 5 million from Susquehanna, named in the firm's launch material as an authorised market participant.
  2. The division of labour inside the funds is clean, and it is the part worth reading closely.
  3. Fidelity's framing of the range leans defensive.

Fidelity International has launched a two-fund income range in Europe, the Fidelity Global Equity Enhanced Yield UCITS ETF and the Fidelity US Equity Enhanced Yield UCITS ETF. Each combines an actively managed equity portfolio with a systematic options overlay that sells index call options with the aim of generating additional income, and each is seeded with USD 5 million from Susquehanna, named in the firm's launch material as an authorised market participant.

The division of labour inside the funds is clean, and it is the part worth reading closely. Stock selection and portfolio construction draw on Fidelity's global fundamental research platform, which the firm says operates within a disciplined, risk-managed framework; the income comes from a rules-based process for writing index calls. Selling options against an index rather than against the shares the funds own leaves the managers' individual positions to run underneath the overlay, but it also means the premium is collected on a market-wide strike, so the payoff should look like equity exposure with the top of the rally clipped and the premium kept — in flat or falling markets, that premium is where the return comes from.

Fidelity's framing of the range leans defensive. Neil Davies, head of ETFs, points to growing demand for strategies that provide alternative sources of income while allowing investors to remain invested in equity markets, and says what differentiates the range is systematic access to the firm's bottom-up equity research; the option premiums, he adds, also help cushion some of the impact of market declines. Vincent Li, head of derivatives, describes options as a powerful tool for reshaping the return profile of an equity investment, and calls the approach deliberately systematic, using a disciplined framework to select and implement index call options while retaining meaningful participation in equity markets.

Putting a derivatives head beside the ETF head in the launch material is a fair indication of where the firm expects the differentiation to sit, in the rules-based writing of index calls rather than in the equity research that feeds the portfolios. One overlay running across a global and a US equity sleeve suggests a template as much as a pair of products, since the same engine would be the cheapest part of the range to extend to other equity universes. The firm also says ESG factors are considered when assessing investment risks and opportunities.

What the coverage does not carry is a price. The report does not say what either fund charges, which leaves the expense ratio as the number most likely to decide whether the income these overlays generate survives contact with a client's account. Susquehanna's USD 5 million per fund is the only figure the coverage attaches to the launch.
