DTCC invests in iCapital and will integrate its alternative investment product with the platform

The two firms will connect DTCC's Alternative Investment Product with iCapital's platform across transaction processing, data exchange, access, administration and reporting.

At a glance

  1. The firms will also explore collaboration on newer technology, which iCapital chairman and CEO Lawrence Calcano said could include blockchain-enabled DLT and tokenization.
  2. The report calls iCapital one of the biggest and most widely used alternative investment platforms in wealth management, which is why an integration at this layer reaches practices that have already put alts into client models.
  3. DTCC's involvement goes further than a vendor contract: Talia Klein, its head of wealth and investment solutions, will become an observer on iCapital's board.

WealthManagement.com reported Sept. 28 that The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation has invested in iCapital and announced a strategic collaboration with the alternative investment platform. The first piece of work is an integration between DTCC's Alternative Investment Product and iCapital's platform, connecting the two organizations' capabilities across transaction processing, data exchange, access, administration and reporting. The firms will also explore collaboration on newer technology, which iCapital chairman and CEO Lawrence Calcano said could include blockchain-enabled DLT and tokenization.

Those functions are the back office of an allocation: the processing, the data that moves between platform and custodian, the reporting that ends up in a client's statement. The report calls iCapital one of the biggest and most widely used alternative investment platforms in wealth management, which is why an integration at this layer reaches practices that have already put alts into client models. It is also the kind of project that costs more than the license, as Schwab's $240-a-seat AI rollout showed; the process change, not the subscription, is the expense. Whether the DTCC hookup reaches the desk as faster reporting and less reconciliation is the open question, and the announcement describes connected capabilities rather than a finished build.

A clearing utility takes a board seat

DTCC's involvement goes further than a vendor contract: Talia Klein, its head of wealth and investment solutions, will become an observer on iCapital's board. The cap table she joins is already a consortium of the firms that sell, custody and distribute alternatives: iCapital raised more than $820 million last year from T. Rowe Price Associates, T. Rowe Price Investment Management, SurgoCap Partners, State Street Investment Management, Temasek, UBS and BNY, with Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, BlackRock and Blackstone among its other investors. Adding an industry-owned clearing utility — one that has spent years standardizing data and processing for account opening and closing, funds transfers, billing and reconciliation — puts an owner inside the platform alongside them.

Frank La Salla, DTCC's president, CEO and director, framed the partnership around adoption, saying broader use of alternatives depends on an ecosystem that is easier to navigate, more efficient to operate and more resilient. That reads as a bet that the constraint on alts growth is operational, the position this publication has taken in covering the wrapper and fee questions that accompany each new fund launch. The report gives neither the size of DTCC's investment nor a completion date for the integration, and the timetable is likely to matter more to an advisor's calendar than the equity itself.
