Clarity AI has launched a transition credibility assessment service for investors weighing corporate decarbonisation plans. The product tracks indicators including green capital expenditure, reporting quality, technology deployment and governance of transition plans.

The launch lands as asset owners shift toward transition investing. In Net Zero Investor's Climate Capital Allocation Index, 77% of surveyed funds said they expect their managers to expand engagement with high emitters and assess corporate transition plans. Net Zero Investor reported the launch on Nov. 5.

For a fund selector holding a transition sleeve, Clarity AI's indicators are a checklist to run against underlying holdings rather than the label on the fund. AP7, the Swedish pension investor that introduced a transition portfolio in 2022, sets financial strength as a core inclusion criterion. Its latest climate action plan says the test is a company's financial strength “both to meet our return requirements and to ensure that the company has the capacity to carry out the necessary transition”. Balance-sheet strength is the easier half of that screen to check; whether a plan is credible is the judgment the new service aims to supply.

Research from Morningstar Sustainalytics, cited in the same article, finds the link between corporate transitions and profitability is conditional on organizational capacity. “The same transition activity may strengthen profitability at one company while weakening it at another, depending on the firm's underlying structural capacity”, the report says.

“There is no shortage of climate targets,” said Alice Borgonovo, a senior product manager at Clarity AI responsible for climate solutions. “What investors need to understand is whether companies are taking the steps needed to meet them.”

Net Zero Investor describes the prize as transition alpha — returns linked to credible decarbonisation — while noting that investment decisions remain primarily motivated by risk-adjusted returns.
