Charter CFO joins Blackstone-Google TPU venture

The hire of a cable-industry finance chief shows the neocloud is being built to utility specs, with the balance sheet leading the chips.

At a glance

  1. Blackstone's funds are committing $5 billion in equity toward the partners' 500MW target by 2027, and the still-unnamed venture is headed by former Google engineering VP Benjamin Treynor Sloss.
  2. The venture is designed to sell Google's Tensor Processing Units outside Google Cloud, historically the only place they were available.
  3. The move also points to where the risk sits.

Jessica Fischer, Charter Communications' chief financial officer, is leaving the cable operator after nearly a decade to join the Google-Blackstone TPU neocloud, according to Data Center Dynamics, starting in October while Kevin Howard, Charter's EVP, chief accounting officer and controller, steps in as interim. Blackstone's funds are committing $5 billion in equity toward the partners' 500MW target by 2027, and the still-unnamed venture is headed by former Google engineering VP Benjamin Treynor Sloss.

The venture is designed to sell Google's Tensor Processing Units outside Google Cloud, historically the only place they were available. The hire of a public-company CFO from a cable operator is the clearest indication yet that the partners intend to run this as a standalone, fundable business. Cable is a business of physical plant, recurring revenue and long-lived assets, and a CFO who has financed that kind of balance sheet is the right person to underwrite a 500MW buildout.

The move also points to where the risk sits. As this publication has argued, grid access, not compute, is the binding constraint on the AI buildout, and the announcement does not say where the 500MW will come from. Blackstone's equity can fund the transformers and the TPUs, but it cannot buy a place in the interconnection queue ahead of every other hyperscaler and utility chasing the same substations. Fischer's likely real assignment, in that context, is the capital structure that pays for power while the revenue from TPU rentals is still ramping.

The broader buildout is churning through senior executives. OpenAI's data center chief recently exited as that company heads toward a $750 billion compute budget, per this publication's reporting. Blackstone, meanwhile, has shown it can wait for development-stage projects to mature, having just secured European approval for a €2 billion renewables bet. Fischer's appointment suggests the neocloud is taking its financial engineering as seriously as its chip supply. For a venture that wants to be priced like infrastructure rather than like a merchant experiment, that is the right order of priorities.

October 15, the day Fischer leaves Charter, is the first date on a calendar that runs to that 2027 megawatt target.
