Bluecore banks $50M seed for floating nuclear plants

The round’s real test is how fast the coordinated NRC and Coast Guard review produces a schedule, not the barge’s megawatt rating.

At a glance

  1. The proceeds are earmarked for engineering and hardware development, testing and validation, regulatory and classification work, manufacturing, and hiring—the full push to move its first maritime nuclear system from design toward deployment.
  2. Bluecore’s initial system uses a small modular, water-cooled reactor designed to deliver roughly 10 megawatts of continuous power from a barge that the company says can operate for years between refuelings, and the first unit is under development at the Port of Long Beach with the first barge already secured.
  3. Silverton Partners led the seed round, and Slauson & Co., an existing backer, continued with a substantial investment alongside new and existing investors.

Bluecore Energy left stealth in July with a $10 million pre-seed and a plan to put water-cooled reactors on barges, and on Sept. 8 the Port of Long Beach-based developer said it has added $50 million in seed financing to that war chest. The proceeds are earmarked for engineering and hardware development, testing and validation, regulatory and classification work, manufacturing, and hiring—the full push to move its first maritime nuclear system from design toward deployment. The round’s real test will be how quickly the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Coast Guard produce a joint review schedule.

Bluecore’s initial system uses a small modular, water-cooled reactor designed to deliver roughly 10 megawatts of continuous power from a barge that the company says can operate for years between refuelings, and the first unit is under development at the Port of Long Beach with the first barge already secured. The company is positioning future systems for ports, data centers including AI-oriented facilities, and coastal infrastructure, with offshore deployment listed as a possibility.

Silverton Partners led the seed round, and Slauson & Co., an existing backer, continued with a substantial investment alongside new and existing investors. In a statement, founder and CEO Kofi Asante said the company now has “the capital, the team, the hardware, and some of the most important institutions in nuclear and maritime working alongside us.”

The institutional support matters because Bluecore has opened a coordinated review with both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard. The two-agency track reflects what the project actually is: a floating reactor at once a nuclear plant and a vessel, and it has to pass both tests. That is also where the commercial risk sits. A barge-mounted plant is a siting answer to the hardest question new nuclear faces—where to put it—but floating the reactor does not float the permitting, and the same modularity that lets Bluecore build in a yard and deliver by sea is what complicates the review.

Bluecore’s pitch sits where two of the most watched power stories meet: the data-center build-out and the search for small nuclear formats that can be sited close to load. The $50 million is a down payment on both, but the round will not look smart until the regulatory path has a schedule. The first number to measure is the pace of the NRC and Coast Guard review, not the barge’s 10 MW rating, and the first sign of traction would be the two agencies publishing clear milestones for maritime nuclear deployment.
