Ascensus launches referral platform routing 401(k) savers to plan advisers

The recordkeeper, which administers more than $1.3 trillion for more than 16 million savers, expects 18 to 20 partner firms live on the platform within a year.

Ascensus has launched a referral platform that routes 401(k) savers to plan advisers, adding an advice channel to a recordkeeping business that administers more than $1.3 trillion for more than 16 million savers.

The firm's retirement president expects 18 to 20 partner firms to be live on the platform by this time next year, according to the coverage. The coverage does not name the partner firms, the advisers receiving referrals, or the terms under which a referral is passed along. Ascensus's own tracker entry for the launch is dated Oct. 19, 2026.

The structure matters because of who holds the account. A recordkeeper already knows which participants are in a plan, at what balance and for how long. A referral that begins from that position starts with an identified saver rather than a purchased list. How participants are matched to a particular advisory firm, and whether they can decline the introduction or pick among firms, is not described in the coverage.

Advice contact already runs through recordkeepers

Cerulli found that one-third of retirement plan participants had advice contact with their recordkeeper in the past year. Those who engaged rated their recordkeeper a 9 or 10 at a 46% rate, against 28% for those who did not, according to the firm's survey work. Both figures describe participants who sought the contact; they do not establish that a referral produced by the recordkeeper will convert at the same rate, which makes the partner-firm count one number to watch against actual referral volume.

The dollar case sits in the rollover data. In Escalent's Cogent survey from July, 46% of participants holding a former employer's plan said they were highly likely to open a rollover IRA, and those former-employer balances averaged $90,000. The survey covered 4,006 U.S. DC participants. A platform aimed at plan advisers, as this one is described, stops short of that rollover decision; whether the referrals extend to IRA advice is not stated in the coverage.

Betterment's solo 401(k) addition

Betterment added mega-backdoor Roth to its solo 401(k) plans, with automated tools that let advisers track contributions against annual limits. Support for employer-sponsored plans is planned, the coverage says. Its tracker entry is dated Oct. 20, 2026, one day after Ascensus's.

The two items are separate announcements that landed a day apart, and nothing in the material links them. The contrast is in the shape of the business each one is building. Ascensus is opening a channel from a plan population it already administers to outside advisers. Betterment is widening what its own solo 401(k) product does before it handles employer-sponsored plans at all, per the firm's stated plan.

For advisers, the Ascensus platform is a supply question rather than a product one: how many firms get on the list, and what a referral costs in time or revenue share. Those terms are the part the coverage leaves open, along with whether the introductions stay inside 401(k) plan advice or follow the participant out the door at job change, where Escalent's rollover numbers point.
