Ascensus has built a referral program that flags 401(k) participants at job changes, rollovers and retirement, then routes them to the advisor already serving their employer's plan. The Dresher, Pennsylvania-based recordkeeper unveiled the workplace-to-wealth platform late last month, InvestmentNews reported.

Ascensus administers more than $1.3 trillion in assets for more than 16 million savers. The platform combines that participant data with advisor engagement tools and referral workflows. Dan Morrison, president of Retirement at Ascensus, told InvestmentNews that the first partner firm is going live on the program now; he declined to name it, according to the publication.

Morrison said he expects "somewhere in the realm of 18 to 20 partners" live on the platform by this time next year.

A joint Cerulli and Morningstar study of 338 advisors serving defined contribution plans found that 10.2% of their wealth clients came from DC plan relationships. In the same research, 91.2% of the advisors placed at least a moderate priority on growing their wealth practice, and capacity, data and technology gaps were flagged as root causes. Among advisors who do not see wealth growth as a high priority, 37.8% said they lack the time to prospect for wealth clients in their DC plans, the most common reason the study recorded. Morrison frames the sponsor relationship as the asset: "DC is a great place to go and build a wealth business because you get a sponsor to sign on. They're hiring you and effectively endorsing you then to provide advice at the plan level." Scale is the hard part. "Doing it at scale is difficult, and it takes a massive amount of time and energy," he said.

When it announced the program, Ascensus cited Cerulli's U.S. Retirement End-Investor 2025 report, which found that 63% of active 401(k) participants do not have a financial advisor. The referral logic runs off what the recordkeeper can see. Morrison said AI advances give Ascensus more data on participant behavior than it has had before. "We can be a force multiplier effectively to identify those participants, identify that they need help," he said.

Ascensus's referral structure means only the advisor serving the employer's plan gets the introduction; an outside advisor has no route into those participants. The recordkeeper holds a timing signal before any advisor: the job change, the rollover, the retirement date. Cerulli has found a third of retirement plan participants had recordkeeper advice contact in the past year, and Escalent's Cogent survey put 46% of former-employer DC plan holders at high likelihood of opening a rollover IRA.
