Ascensus launches a participant-referral workflow for plan advisers

The platform links 401(k) savers with the adviser serving their plan across a book of more than 16 million participants and $1.3 trillion in administered assets.

At a glance

  1. Ascensus expects the platform to give participants referral workflows and insights that link savers with their plan advisers, describing the intent as a more connected experience across workplace savings and personal wealth management that leaves savers, advisers, employers and financial institutions in their existing relationships.
  2. The scale underneath the launch is what plan advisers will weigh.
  3. A workflow that surfaces an adviser to a saver while that person is still a participant moves the conversation earlier, before the balance leaves the plan — which is the whole reason a recordkeeper's distribution build matters to a practice that earns nothing on the plan itself until it does.

Ascensus has launched a workplace-to-wealth platform that routes retirement plan participants to the adviser already serving their plan, a referral workflow aimed at the distance between a 401(k) balance and a wealth-management relationship, PlanAdviser reported in its Oct. 1 product roundup.

Ascensus expects the platform to give participants referral workflows and insights that link savers with their plan advisers, describing the intent as a more connected experience across workplace savings and personal wealth management that leaves savers, advisers, employers and financial institutions in their existing relationships. An artificial-intelligence assistant in the build is meant to help a saver reach the adviser serving their plan when guidance is needed.

The scale underneath the launch is what plan advisers will weigh. As of Aug. 30, Ascensus served more than 16 million plan participants and administered more than $1.3 trillion in assets, so the referral plumbing reaches savers in plans the firm already records rather than sitting on a single sponsor's roster.

This publication has argued that the rollover moment is where the plan relationship gets settled, and that the $4.9 trillion IRA-over-401(k) spread is the figure advisers can put to work in an income conversation. A workflow that surfaces an adviser to a saver while that person is still a participant moves the conversation earlier, before the balance leaves the plan — which is the whole reason a recordkeeper's distribution build matters to a practice that earns nothing on the plan itself until it does.

Who sits in the referral path

Ascensus says the platform links savers with their plan advisers and preserves relationships among savers, advisers, employers and institutions, language that points the pathway through advisers already attached to the plan rather than any adviser a participant might name. The announcement gives no price, no eligibility rule and no rollout sequence for the recordkeeping clients that would carry the workflow, so how many plans switch it on, and which advisers those plans point participants toward, is unresolved.

Advisers who hold plan relationships today are the ones with a claim on the pipeline, and the practical test is whether a plan sponsor is offered the workflow at all; whether Ascensus attaches a fee to the referral, and which recordkeeping clients go live first, is the detail the launch notice leaves out.
