Alto launches a single-workflow private-market platform for RIAs

The self-directed IRA custodian is betting that operational friction, not client demand, has kept private-market deals out of retirement accounts.

Alto, the self-directed IRA custodian, is launching a single-workflow platform for RIAs to execute private-market deals. The company's Private Deal Room houses custody, transactional and compliance processes in one place, aimed at reducing the operational complexity that keeps alternatives out of many retirement accounts.

The market context is wide. Alto cites Preqin's projection that global alternatives will reach $32 trillion in AUM by 2030. A KKR survey found 74% of wealth managers showed interest in increasing client allocations to private markets. Morningstar's PitchBook reports close to 19,000 U.S. RIAs cite complex operational and administrative tasks as the main hindrance to completing a deal, many struggling to coordinate diligence, documentation, compliance and custody across separate providers. Demand is clear; execution is the bottleneck.

Alto is betting the obstacle is process, not appetite. The firm's own footprint is roughly $2 billion in custody across 32,000 self-directed IRA accounts. Founder and CEO Eric Satz says too many private-market opportunities die on the vine because operational hurdles are too great. SVP of Revenue Evan Deussing says the platform gives RIAs access to a broader private-markets ecosystem with the ease, technology and service that many traditional platforms cannot provide. Advisers can also oversee retirement accounts, cash balances, transfers and private investments, with backing from transaction specialists.

The IRA wrapper matters. This is retirement money, but an individual saver decides, not a plan committee. The platform sits on the self-directed side of the retirement market, outside the defined-contribution machinery where plan sponsors and recordkeepers set the pace. The test is adoption and custody flows. A single workflow cannot manufacture demand, but it can remove a genuine reason RIAs say no.
