Wells Fargo raises advisor pay hurdle to $16,000 a month

A $1 million producer would lose about $8,400 in cash payout, while deferred compensation now depends on growth.

$8.4KAnnual payout cut for a $1 million producer

At a glance

  1. Wells Fargo disclosed the new threshold in an Oct. 23 Form ADV that lists $671.4 billion in regulatory assets.
  2. For a $1 million producer, the new threshold shifts $2,500 of each month's revenue from the 50% band to the 22% band.
  3. Advisors are paid 22% of revenue up to the $16,000 mark and 50% above it, Sol Gindi, head of Wells Fargo Advisors, said.

Wells Fargo Advisors will raise the monthly revenue hurdle in its advisor pay plan to $16,000 from $13,500 on Jan. 1, the firm's first change to the threshold since 2022.

Wells Fargo disclosed the new threshold in an Oct. 23 Form ADV that lists $671.4 billion in regulatory assets. Average annual revenue for advisors in the firm's Private Client Group has risen 57% since the threshold last moved in 2022, according to a company presentation.

For a $1 million producer, the new threshold shifts $2,500 of each month's revenue from the 50% band to the 22% band. That is $30,000 a year at a 28-point lower rate, or about $8,400 less in cash. Replacing it at the 50% marginal rate would take roughly $16,800 in added revenue.

Advisors are paid 22% of revenue up to the $16,000 mark and 50% above it, Sol Gindi, head of Wells Fargo Advisors, said. Advisors and teams with more than $2 million in combined revenue skip the hurdle and are paid a flat 50%. Wells is the only wirehouse that structures its pay formula around a monthly hurdle rather than a revenue-based grid, according to AdvisorHub.

Deferred compensation depends on growth: advisors with growing practices can earn 6% to 11% under the 2027 plan, while those whose production is shrinking are capped at 8%. A net-negative year deducts two percentage points, and advisors producing less than $714,000 receive none. The deferred schedule takes effect Jan. 1.

Wells's example shows a $2 million producer can earn a 50% cash payout plus 8.5% in deferred compensation. AdvisorHub reports that at least one rival firm's grid tops out at 55.5%, including deferred compensation, for its highest producers.

Wells is also adding a deposit growth award to its deferred compensation plan, supplementing an existing lending bonus. The award is based on year-over-year growth in trailing checking revenue and brokered liquid deposit revenue and pays 150% of year-over-year deposit-driven revenue growth.
