Financial Finesse's Financial Wellness Think Tank, with findings reported by 401(k) Specialist, followed workers 55 and over who spent about a year with the firm's virtual wellness program. For each planning step, the numbers reflect only those who had not already done it. Among them, 91.8% named or updated a retirement plan beneficiary. Separately, 82.3% raised contributions enough to capture the full employer match. A smaller share, 67.3%, worked through a retirement income estimate. And 54.8% changed their investment allocations. Just over half, 54.2%, moved further along toward their overall retirement goal.
The gains arrive even as confidence falls. The Employee Benefit Research Institute's 2026 Retirement Confidence Survey put the share of workers who feel confident about retiring comfortably at 61%. That is down from 67% a year earlier. The Institutional Retirement Income Council has made retirement readiness and retirement income outcomes central priorities for 2026.
For plan sponsors, the 82.3% match-capture result is the one to study first. Raising contributions to get the full employer match is the step with the most direct payoff, and the one employers can most easily encourage through plan design. That it moved among workers closest to retirement, with the least time to adjust, suggests sustained wellness engagement can do something enrollment campaigns often cannot.
Financial Finesse's proprietary ROI model puts a dollar figure on those readiness gains. A company with 50,000 employees would see annual savings of about $1.95 million. The total reflects improved financial outcomes and productivity. The catch is durability. The study tracks roughly a year of engagement, and the savings projection depends on employer assumptions. Personalized, sustained guidance appears to be what moves retirement planning from an intention to a completed step.
