Vultr plans 20MW of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs in Chennai, India

Vultr calls it India's largest AMD Instinct deployment; the report did not name a host data center or capital figure.

At a glance

  1. Data Center Dynamics reported the plan on 21 October.
  2. The plan follows the launch of Vultr's Chennai cloud region earlier this week and its 2022 Mumbai region, part of a network the company counts at 34 cloud data center regions.
  3. Chief executive J.J. Kardwell tied the location to customers that need infrastructure they can reach locally for data sovereignty, data residency and latency reasons.

Vultr plans to add 20MW of AMD Instinct MI355X GPU capacity in Chennai, a build the privately held cloud provider claims would be India's largest AMD Instinct deployment. Data Center Dynamics reported the plan on 21 October.

The plan follows the launch of Vultr's Chennai cloud region earlier this week and its 2022 Mumbai region, part of a network the company counts at 34 cloud data center regions. It would be Vultr's second large AMD deployment, after a similar one in Springfield, Ohio.

Chief executive J.J. Kardwell tied the location to customers that need infrastructure they can reach locally for data sovereignty, data residency and latency reasons. Jaya Jagadish, AMD's India country head and senior vice president of engineering, said India has the talent and ideas to build the next generation of AI, and that compute at this scale would help more of those ideas become real.

Data Center Dynamics did not identify the data center that would host the deployment, give a capital figure for the 20MW, or say whether any of it is pre-leased.

Vultr has deployed AMD's MI325X and MI355X parts before, added MI455X chips to its platform in July 2026 and plans to expand that capacity in 2027. The Instinct MI355X chips carry 288GB of HBM3E memory and 8TBps of bandwidth, according to Data Center Dynamics.
