Virgin Media O2 switches on standalone 5G in Northern Ireland

The cloud-native standalone core is a genuine upgrade, and its economics will depend on subscriber adoption rather than the coverage map.

At a glance

  1. The operator says the service is available to more than 800,000 residents, with Belfast, Derry, Lisburn and Armagh among the larger locations and Ballycastle and Portrush standing in for the smaller settlements.
  2. For an infrastructure investor, the spread matters more than the total: five cities and 22 large towns are the dense, revenue-friendly layer of the map, while the other 382 listed locations are where a standalone core's capital cost is spread across far thinner usage.
  3. 5G+ runs on a standalone 5G core rather than borrowing capacity from 4G, which Virgin Media O2 describes as cloud-based and says it raises capacity, lowers latency and connects more devices at once.

Virgin Media O2 has switched on 5G+ across Northern Ireland, Data Center Dynamics reports, extending its standalone 5G core to five cities, 22 large towns and 382 smaller towns, villages and hamlets. The operator says the service is available to more than 800,000 residents, with Belfast, Derry, Lisburn and Armagh among the larger locations and Ballycastle and Portrush standing in for the smaller settlements. The rollout sits inside the company's £700 million ($944m) UK network investment programme for this year.

For an infrastructure investor, the spread matters more than the total: five cities and 22 large towns are the dense, revenue-friendly layer of the map, while the other 382 listed locations are where a standalone core's capital cost is spread across far thinner usage. The operator's announcement frames the opportunity around residents rather than around enterprise or wholesale customers, and with no contracted offtaker named for the new core, the rollout sits on the usage-dependent side of the digital-infrastructure capital hierarchy. Consumer mobile networks earn their return one retail tariff at a time, not through anchor contracts.

5G+ runs on a standalone 5G core rather than borrowing capacity from 4G, which Virgin Media O2 describes as cloud-based and says it raises capacity, lowers latency and connects more devices at once. The company launched its 5G SA network in February 2024, and the Northern Ireland rollout follows a Welsh launch in May 2026, when the carrier said its 5G SA network covered 90 percent of the UK population.

None of that makes the switch-on trivial: a cloud-native standalone core is a genuine network upgrade, not a different sticker on the same radio. But the economics will be written in subscriber adoption, and the coverage figures do not say how many of the 800,000 residents hold capable devices and plans. The take-up number is the part the network map cannot show.
