Closures ran at 239 ETFs through August, a pace of roughly one product shut for every five launched, the same VettaFi research shows. Total U.S. ETF assets have passed $15 trillion, spread across about 5,550 listed funds.
For advisors, that turnover changes due diligence and, in taxable accounts, the client's tax bill. A forced liquidation can trigger capital gains distributions in non-qualified accounts, leaving clients with a liability they did not plan for. The advisor also absorbs the work: sourcing a replacement, rebalancing the account and explaining why an allocation disappeared.

What the $100 million line screens for
Assets are concentrated at the top: the 24 largest ETFs hold more than $6.5 trillion, about 42% of the market, according to VettaFi. At the other end, 51% of U.S. ETFs hold under $100 million and together make up 0.50% of industry assets. The white paper calls $100 million the standard breakeven threshold for fund profitability, so half the listed shelf sits below the level at which an issuer covers its costs.
Only about 13% of ETFs reach $250 million within their first three years, and 4% pass $1 billion in that window, VettaFi found. Issuers use committed seed capital and institutional distribution to shorten the climb, the report says.
Options-based, leveraged and derivative strategies accounted for more than 40% of new launches through mid-August and an identical 40% of liquidations, according to the same data.
Exiting a closing fund carries its own cost. Once an issuer announces a shutdown, market makers pull capital, trading volume drops and bid-ask spreads widen, which the report says can erode the fund's prior gains or downside protection. That cost appears in the final weeks, when the advisor is already sourcing a replacement.
