TIAA provided $750 million of equity for Mariner Re, a new Class E-licensed life reinsurer in Bermuda formed to support growth in Symetra Life Insurance Company's annuity business.

Mariner Re supplies committed growth capital through a flow reinsurance arrangement that was effective from Oct. 1, 2026, according to Royal Gazette Bermuda Re, which reported the launch. The report does not give the premium volume the vehicle will reinsure.

Investment management is shared between Symetra Investment Management Company, which holds the lead role, and Nuveen, the asset manager TIAA owns. For insurers and general-account teams, the mandate sits with affiliates of the two parents rather than an outside manager, so the split of the portfolio between SIM and Nuveen, and the fee terms, determines where the asset-management income lands. The report gives neither.

The companies said the dual-manager structure combines SIM's insurance asset management with Nuveen's institutional reach, giving Mariner Re broader access to asset classes and strategies. Nicholas Mocciolo, Symetra's chief investment officer, said SIM's lead role "reflects our commitment and investment partnership with Mariner Re and Symetra."

SIM, founded in 2019 and based in Farmington, Connecticut, manages about $93.8 billion. Its investment activities span investment-grade corporate credit, high yield, bank loans, commercial mortgage loans, private placements, structured credit, hedging and alternatives, a list that runs from public credit into private placements and commercial mortgages.

For TIAA, the equity commitment is a balance-sheet move. Chief financial officer Dave Dowrich said the transaction "allows TIAA to expand and diversify our balance sheet" while deepening the firm's longstanding relationship with Symetra and its parent, Japan's Sumitomo Life.

The structure links the two groups at both ends: TIAA's capital sits behind Symetra's annuity growth, and TIAA's own asset manager helps invest the portfolio backing it. A larger share for Nuveen over time would move more of that fee income toward TIAA, while a larger share for SIM would keep it inside Symetra.

Margaret Meister, president and chief executive of Symetra Financial Corporation, said Mariner Re "supports our ability to grow annuity sales," adding that the TIAA relationship pairs the two firms' financial strength and insurance expertise with what she described as a strong cultural alignment.

Two affiliated managers, one undisclosed split

The arrangement does not create a new external mandate to shop. It extends a relationship TIAA already had with Symetra and Sumitomo Life into a reinsurance vehicle that writes alongside Symetra's annuity business from the effective date of Oct. 1, 2026.

Whether Mariner Re's portfolio looks like a broader-mandate version of SIM's own book, or leans on Nuveen's institutional strategies, is the question the filing does not answer. That answer, and the fee basis behind it, is what any insurer weighing a similar flow arrangement would want before signing one.
