The talent war finds the fiduciary bench

Northern Trust pulled two advisors from Fiduciary Trust International and Bailard hired a Laird Norton Wetherby executive, extending the recruiting battle beyond broker-dealers.

While the platform war dominated headlines, a quieter raid unfolded in the trust and fiduciary channel. Northern Trust hired James Le Rose and Gloria Fieldcamp from Fiduciary Trust International, and Bailard picked off Simon Smundak from Laird Norton Wetherby. The recruiting front is spreading to the fiduciary bench, where a two-advisor same-day exit from one firm registers as a deliberate push.

The trust channel rarely produces noisy departures, because clients sit inside multi-generational relationships and an advisor who moves is moving a book built over decades, not a brokerage trail assembled through transactions. That stickiness is what makes two fiduciaries leaving the same firm in one day look like an intentional push into a pool most recruiters ignore. Northern Trust also added Katie Nixon as an executive, though her previous firm is not listed, and her timing with the two Fiduciary Trust hires suggests a coordinated buildout rather than three coincidental moves.

Across the same overnight window, the more familiar recruiting ran hot too: David Lazorik left Wells Fargo for Raymond James Financial Services with $160 million in assets, and the Hatfield, FIGLIN & MORENO team moved from Evoke Advisors to MAI Capital Management in a four-advisor liftout. Those transactions continue the wirehouse-to-independent and RIA-consolidation story, the kind brokerage recruiters know how to execute.

Northern Trust and Bailard pulled from trust-company peers rather than waiting for a wirehouse team to break away, making the trust channel arguably the last under-recruited bench in private wealth. The economics differ: breakaway brokers bring portable revenue, while trust specialists carry fiduciary relationships often tied to trust documents and family boards, so recruiting one means acquiring a multi-decade relationship, not just a trailing-12 production number.

Bailard, an asset manager with a history in separate accounts, appears to be building a fiduciary distribution capability rather than merely adding a sales hire, a reading supported by its hire of Simon Smundak from Laird Norton Wetherby. If that holds, the next hires at asset managers will come from trust companies and family offices that have spent decades building fiduciary credibility, not from brokerage desk pools.

PWD's tally shows team liftouts outpacing breakaways nine to one, a pattern that reflects aggregators buying whole books rather than custody moving. The trust-channel moves mean the next team liftout may come from a trust company, not a broker-dealer, and that prospect puts every mid-sized trust office on notice: its least visible employees are now a recruiting target, and the tools used to retain wirehouse brokers—forgivable loans, transition deals, equity grants—may not translate to fiduciaries whose clients rarely reprice by production.

Trust companies and private fiduciary firms will likely respond with retention packages and non-solicitation enforcement, because a competitor that can hire two advisors from one trust office in a day can hire four. The Northern Trust move, if it becomes a pattern, puts the stability question to every firm in the channel. The channel now has to decide whether this was an isolated raid or the first round of a longer campaign. Watch for a trust-company team to follow these individuals out the door.
