The meeting is the new AI battleground

Vanguard's Altruist tax-AI deal and a wave of meeting-focused launches move the platform war into the advisor-client conversation.

The 45-minute client meeting is where the next platform war gets settled, and the product launches arriving now all converge on that same hour. Vanguard's $4.6 billion acquisition of Altruist includes an AI tax tool designed for the advisor-client workflow, Morningstar's Gemini deal targets the advisor-client conversation rather than back-office processing, AssetMark's Talk Tracks captures and structures client dialogue for follow-up, and Practifi's Sentir folds AI into the CRM core instead of bolting on a notetaker. On paper these are three different products; in practice they are the same product aimed at the same hour of the advisor's week.

The common architecture is a loop: what an advisor says gets captured, structured, and returned as follow-ups, while what the client says feeds the next meeting's agenda. That places the AI closer to the relationship than the back-office automation of the earlier wave, and the relationship is where retention gets decided.

Tax is the easiest place to see the payoff: april wired IRS transcripts into advisors' year-round planning workflow, tax-planning software adoption has climbed 11 points in three years, and when a client's transcript is already on screen, a tax-aware AI layer can turn a routine review into a planning event. That is the workflow Altruist's tax tool is built for, and why the tax piece is more than a feature — it is the wedge into the meeting.

Advisors get less note-taking and better follow-through, but platforms are playing for larger stakes: the conversation is raw material, and whoever structures it first defines the next product suggestion, tax move, and referral. The clustering of product names is a land grab for the least automated part of the advice business.

The hiring confirms the direction: Osaic named its first AI chief after a $2 billion recapitalization, treating AI as a retention lever rather than a back-office expense, and LPL added both a chief product and technology officer and a chief technology and information officer in one day. PWD's tracking shows the Morningstar, AssetMark, and Practifi launches landing in the same window. The platform wars have been fought over custody, pricing, and model marketplaces; the next round is fought inside a quarterly review while the advisor and client are talking, and whoever captures that conversation, structures it, and feeds it back as next steps keeps the assets when the next fee cut arrives.

$4.6 billion for Altruist is the cost of owning the tax-aware layer of the advisor-client meeting, not the cost of custody alone. Watch whether the next round of meeting-AI comes from the custodians or the CRMs; whoever ships it first gets the 45 minutes that matter.
