The Hartford names Mo Tooker to succeed Christopher Swift as CEO

Tooker, a former General Re president who joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer, becomes CEO in March 2027 while Swift moves to executive chair.

At a glance

  1. President A. Morris “Mo” Tooker will succeed Christopher Swift as chief executive in March 2027 and join the board effective Oct.
  2. Tooker’s career sits on the risk-selection side of the business.
  3. The announcement leans on Swift’s record: net income return on equity more than tripled during his tenure, the share price rose more than eightfold, and The Hartford describes a transformation into a more focused and more disciplined insurer.

The Hartford has settled its succession by picking an underwriter. President A. Morris “Mo” Tooker will succeed Christopher Swift as chief executive in March 2027 and join the board effective Oct. 1; Swift, who has spent nearly 13 years as CEO, moves to executive chair once he steps aside.

Tooker’s career sits on the risk-selection side of the business. He joined the Hartford, Connecticut-based insurer in 2015 as chief underwriting officer and was promoted to president in early 2025 after successive leadership roles of increasing responsibility that included oversight of business performance, strategy and enterprise-wide execution; before The Hartford he served as president of General Reinsurance Corporation. The company credits him with advancing underwriting capabilities, expanding risk appetite and extending risk-mitigation services that help customers prevent loss and build resilience.

The announcement leans on Swift’s record: net income return on equity more than tripled during his tenure, the share price rose more than eightfold, and The Hartford describes a transformation into a more focused and more disciplined insurer. As executive chair, he will help guide and oversee corporate strategy and serve as an advisor to the CEO.

A board seat before the handover

By taking a board seat in October for a March handover, Tooker gets roughly five months of boardroom exposure before he holds the operating seat, while the outgoing CEO keeps corporate-strategy oversight and an advisory role that outlasts his tenure. That combination suggests a board buying continuity on the underwriting side without letting go of the strategic hand entirely. This publication has argued that the industry’s discipline test now sits at the top of the reinsurance tower, where Tooker spent his pre-2015 career as president of General Reinsurance.

The open question is where the expanded risk appetite Tooker is credited with meets the discipline the company says it now runs on. Tooker’s title changes in March 2027, but the underwriting decisions that will define his first year are already being made, with a president who for five more months will share the C-suite with a CEO who will stay on as chair and advisor.
