TenneT Netherlands prices a EUR 1.5bn green bond, terms unreported

The Renewables Now item names the issuer and size but omits the coupon, tenor, use of proceeds and bookrunners.

At a glance

  1. A size says what the issuer raised; a coupon says what the money cost, and the margin a green-labelled tranche clears at against a conventional one is the test of whether the label pulls demand or merely travels with it.
  2. The blank columns are a familiar shape in the past month of energy and infrastructure coverage: Subsea Micropiles' GBP 5m Scottish investment, with no site or counterparty named; Masdar and Luxcara's EUR 5bn tie-up, carrying two technologies and no price; and Blacktail and RayGen's Texas hybrid, with no capacity or buyer.
  3. So is the issuer's place in the split between contracted dispatchable power and grid capacity on one side and renewable platforms still waiting on a buyer on the other.

TenneT Netherlands priced a EUR 1.5 billion green bond on 30 September, according to Renewables Now, and the report ends with an issuer, a currency, a size and a label. It carries no coupon, no tenor, no use-of-proceeds language and no bookrunner list, and the text beneath the headline is the outlet describing its own subscription plans rather than the deal. Those absent fields are what a debt deal is read for.

A size says what the issuer raised; a coupon says what the money cost, and the margin a green-labelled tranche clears at against a conventional one is the test of whether the label pulls demand or merely travels with it. An order-book figure, which would show how much demand the deal drew at its clearing level, is missing too. TenneT Netherlands has a single entry in PWD's records, against 178 for the outlet that carried the item.

A bond is not a project equity cheque, and the blank is narrower: pricing is the moment a bond's terms are set, so the coupon and tenor were fixed by 30 September, while the item simply does not carry them. This publication has argued that the unpriced announcement has become the default term sheet in energy, each blank column lowering the floor for the next.

That argument was built on project announcements rather than a priced instrument, and whether a bond belongs in the same pattern is a question the coverage leaves open. So is the issuer's place in the split between contracted dispatchable power and grid capacity on one side and renewable platforms still waiting on a buyer on the other. For a reader who prices infrastructure assets, the coupon is the input other numbers hang off, and a headline size carries none of that. The coupon is what would make the deal useful: a reading on what institutional money charges for euro-denominated green paper, and how far out along the curve it will go for a green label. Until a pricing notice, a bond schedule or a league table supplies the coupon, the tenor and the use-of-proceeds language, the issuance stays a size.
