State Street launches Apex-powered RIA custody unit for $1 billion-plus RIAs

The Boston bank is targeting RIAs managing more than $1 billion with the service, re-entering a custody business it left five years ago, RIABiz reported.

At a glance

  1. The unit launched late last month, led by State Street executive John Plansky and Apex CEO Bill Capuzzi.
  2. State Street custodies $58 trillion in institutional assets, per RIABiz, and Apex supplies the cloud-native, retail-side infrastructure.
  3. RIABiz flags internal risk: Apex's and State Street's willingness to make sacrifices in the name of a "frictionless" experience will be tested, and analysts question whether unseen priorities could prevent a frictionless service.

State Street has launched an RIA custody service built on Apex Clearing's technology and is marketing it to RIAs managing more than $1 billion in assets, RIABiz reported. The unit launched late last month, led by State Street executive John Plansky and Apex CEO Bill Capuzzi. Plansky described the target market in a Q&A with Wealthmanagement.com.

State Street custodies $58 trillion in institutional assets, per RIABiz, and Apex supplies the cloud-native, retail-side infrastructure. Will Trout, director of securities and investments at Datos Insights, describes it as a potential "dream" service: Apex's AI-forward platform plus State Street's institutional breadth, plus what RIABiz describes as a promise not to raise or bolt on fees. Trout described the combination as a "Robinhood-textured interface" joined to old-school financial machinery.

RIABiz flags internal risk: Apex's and State Street's willingness to make sacrifices in the name of a "frictionless" experience will be tested, and analysts question whether unseen priorities could prevent a frictionless service.

Fidelity is moving RIAs under $100 million out, a change this publication reported this month. RIABiz frames the custody market as split between a high-volume end, where Schwab Advisor Services sits, and specialists such as Altruist, leaving what its columnist calls a "mushy middle." That leaves room, in RIABiz's framing, for a service with "Altruist-level tech pedigree but for giant RIAs." BNY Pershing retired Wove and shifted its RIA platform reset to Adam Vos, as this publication reported on Oct. 10.

State Street's last stretch in RIA custody ended with an exit five years ago, which RIABiz's prior coverage calls abrupt. The new unit's threshold — RIAs above $1 billion — puts smaller breakaways and startup firms outside the target market as the service is being marketed now.
