Stash adds 401(k) rollovers to its app; Voya lands D.C. recordkeeping

Stash lets customers roll old 401(k)s into IRAs without leaving the app; Voya wins recordkeeping for D.C.'s public retirement plans.

At a glance

  1. The company has integrated Capitalize's Embedded Rollover API, and the two firms announced the arrangement this week.
  2. Brandon Krieg, Stash's CEO, says too many Americans abandon old 401(k)s because the rollover is harder than it should be.
  3. The integration lets customers search for old employer accounts, originate digital rollover requests and reach support during the transfer, all within Stash.

Stash customers can now search out old 401(k) accounts and move them into an IRA without leaving the app. The company has integrated Capitalize's Embedded Rollover API, and the two firms announced the arrangement this week. Eligible U.S. Stash customers were set to get access starting Aug. 19, according to 401(k) Specialist.

Brandon Krieg, Stash's CEO, says too many Americans abandon old 401(k)s because the rollover is harder than it should be. Building Stash as "the financial advisor for everyone" means making the next right move feel obvious. Gaurav Sharma, Capitalize's CEO, describes the problem in terms of friction: people abandon valuable assets when they switch jobs, and an in-app transfer path gives them a way to take control.

The integration lets customers search for old employer accounts, originate digital rollover requests and reach support during the transfer, all within Stash. A once-a-decade paperwork event turns into a feature inside a consumer finance app. For Stash, the payoff is consolidation: a rollover that lands there is an IRA that stays put.

Voya picks up D.C.'s public plans

The District of Columbia selected Voya Financial as service provider for its 401(a) defined contribution and 457(b) deferred compensation plans. The plans contain more than 52,000 participant accounts, 401(k) Specialist reports. Assets total $4.3 billion.

Voya's duties will cover recordkeeping, plan administration, online engagement, retirement education, in-plan advice, brokerage access and managed accounts. Gavin Gruenberg, who leads Voya's government-market retirement sales, said the District already knew the company's edge in the public sector and was won over by talks about products, technology and service offerings, including participant education and reporting. The District also added the Voya Capital Preservation Fund to the lineup, he added.

Public-sector recordkeeping is a long-duration business. A 457(b) participant often stays in the plan for decades, and the assets follow the contract. The D.C. award is the kind that compounds. The same roundup also carries items from AdvisorFinder, ShareBuilder 401k and Kestra Financial.
