Solana's 150-millisecond finality target hits devnet, still undated

Both public test networks now carry Alpenglow, giving teams somewhere to prepare while the headline speed figure stays a simulation number and the surrounding operations keep the wait.

At a glance

  1. Anza announced the developer-network switch on Sept. 25, one day after the separate testnet completed its own transition, and the Solana Foundation's upgrade page lists Alpenglow as active on both.
  2. Devnet is where application teams check software against tokens that hold no value, while testnet exists mainly to stress-test network software and validator operations; holding both gives teams somewhere to prepare before the live blockchain, the one carrying real money, changes underneath them.
  3. Alpenglow targets 150 milliseconds for finality, the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed, against roughly 12.8 seconds under the existing system, but that figure is a target derived from simulations rather than a demonstrated result under live-market conditions, and no firm launch date has been announced for the live network.

Alpenglow, the Solana upgrade built to make a payment irreversible in 150 milliseconds, is now running on both of the network's public test environments, which gives application teams a place to rehearse before the live chain changes underneath them even though the headline number remains a simulation target and no launch date is set. Anza's software schedule tentatively allows feature activations to resume Sept. 28, which is not the same thing as an Alpenglow launch.

Under Alpenglow, validators exchange votes directly instead of writing those votes as transactions inside blocks, which brings agreement down to one or two voting rounds. The Foundation has told data providers to adjust their comparisons, because transaction totals that count validator votes will shrink even if users make just as many payments and trades. Services that assemble transaction histories have to keep competing candidate blocks apart until the network selects one, since merging their contents would produce an incorrect record, while applications that simply send transactions and read account balances need no migration.

For a tokenized treasury or a tokenized share class, the distance between 12.8 seconds and 150 milliseconds is the argument for treating a public chain as a settlement layer rather than a ledger of record. CoinDesk's reporting supplies the caveat that matters more to an operations desk: an exchange releasing deposited funds, or a payment app telling a merchant a sale is complete, may still wait on wallet processing and the venue's own deposit checks, because the base layer shortens one segment of a path whose remaining segments belong to wallets, exchanges, and their custody and compliance functions.

The Fed's redemption deadline for stablecoins sits in a regulator's calendar rather than in block times, and the same logic applies here in reverse: a chain that settles in 150 milliseconds is selling a component whose price is falling toward zero. On Solana itself, as with the lending venues this publication has covered, the fight is over distribution rather than the base layer. Two things are worth watching: whether feature activations resume on Sept. 28, and whether anyone reproduces 150 milliseconds with real money on the line rather than in simulation. Any team drafting operational language for a tokenized product should treat today's figure as a development target, not a service level.
