SMRF's August was a uranium rally in a tech wrapper

Energy names drove more than 70% of SMRF's 9.02% August index gain, making a would-be reactor-tech fund a uranium-mining trade for the month.

At a glance

  1. ETF Trends, citing VettaFi attribution data, puts the underlying index gain at 9.02% for August: energy, a 40.46% weight, returned 17.7% and contributed 6.64 percentage points, more than 70% of the advance.
  2. Uranium Energy Corp. topped the contributor list with 1.23 points on a 27.5% monthly gain, a move that had already been building when a Simply Wall St snapshot cited by ETF Trends put the stock at $11.17 in mid-August, up 20.37% over the trailing month but still down 14.8% for the year.
  3. Reactor developers moved, too, but with less force: X-energy added 0.46 points after a 13.1% monthly gain, in a month when it signed a supply agreement with Centrus Energy covering low-enriched and high-assay uranium for the Xe-100 design, while NuScale rose 10.1%.

The ALPS Nautilus SMR, Nuclear & Technology ETF tracks uranium miners, nuclear utilities, and small modular reactor developers; in August the miners did the heavy lifting, and the tech-and-reactor side of the label told less of the story than the ticker implied. ETF Trends, citing VettaFi attribution data, puts the underlying index gain at 9.02% for August: energy, a 40.46% weight, returned 17.7% and contributed 6.64 percentage points, more than 70% of the advance. Everything else, including the reactor developers the label advertises, was support.

Energy Fuels added 0.92 points as its shares gained 28.9%, and Kazatomprom contributed 0.75 points on a 17.7% rise. Kazatomprom's Aug. 21 half-year statement put revenue at 717.8 billion tenge, roughly $1.58 billion, up 9% year over year, and its chief executive described utilities moving from policy debate toward long-term supply contracts.

In the technology sleeve, Super Micro Computer added 0.42 points on a 31.3% share gain, and the technology group as a whole returned 7.8%, contributing 1.55 points.

Attribution does not settle whether AI power demand is a durable nuclear story, but it does show where the listed payoff currently sits: SMRF's miners ran well ahead of its reactor developers, and its largest single driver was a producer, not a builder. For an ETF whose name leads with SMRs and technology, the concentration in the fuel cycle was the actual thesis August delivered. It may keep working as utilities lock in supply, but the August numbers leave little doubt about which names carried the month.
