RenaissanceRe extends portfolio duration to 4.2 years

The reinsurer's weighted average yield to maturity rose 120 basis points this year to 6%, its chief financial officer said.

At a glance

  1. RenaissanceRe posted a $161 million net loss for the third quarter as $879.8 million of net realized and unrealized investment losses outran a $426 million underwriting profit.
  2. The duration extension means a given move in yields swings reported investment values roughly 40% further than it did in January, when duration was 3.0 years.
  3. Kevin O'Donnell, the chief executive, said the benchmark ten-year rate was up 80 basis points and that the company now finds itself in "the best fixed-income investment environment in two decades."

RenaissanceRe extended its retained investment portfolio's duration to 4.2 years in September, from three years at the start of 2026, and its weighted average yield to maturity is now 6%.

RenaissanceRe posted a $161 million net loss for the third quarter as $879.8 million of net realized and unrealized investment losses outran a $426 million underwriting profit. Rising yields cut the valuation of fixed-income holdings, the company said on its earnings call. The ten-year US Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2007 this year and was about 5%, Royal Gazette Bermuda Re reported.

The duration extension means a given move in yields swings reported investment values roughly 40% further than it did in January, when duration was 3.0 years. The same sensitivity that magnified this quarter's investment losses now sits behind a portfolio yielding 6% to maturity, which is where the income growth RenaissanceRe is promising comes from. For anyone tracking the reinsurer's capital, the trade is deliberate: accept bigger marks on the asset side in exchange for a higher, longer-running investment contribution to earnings.

Kevin O'Donnell, the chief executive, said the benchmark ten-year rate was up 80 basis points and that the company now finds itself in "the best fixed-income investment environment in two decades." He described the shift to longer durations on the call: "This locks in higher yields for longer, which you will see reflected in growing quarterly net investment income moving forward."

Bob Qutub, the chief financial officer, said the weighted average yield to maturity had risen 120 basis points this year to 6%. It was his last earnings call before retiring; Matt Neuber succeeds him.

RenaissanceRe expects net investment income of about $325 million in the fourth quarter and $1.25 billion for 2026, growing from there next year.
