QTS, Engie sign 48MW solar PPA for Texas data center

The 48MW contract covers part of Lubio Solar's 61MW output, leaving 13MW without a disclosed buyer.

At a glance

  1. The deal was struck alongside a separate PPA between Engie and Abei Energy, under which Engie secured capacity from Abei's 61MW Lubio Solar project in Kaufman County, Texas.
  2. The two-contract structure gives QTS a single retail relationship: Engie supplies the power, and Engie has separately contracted with Abei for the generation.
  3. For a data center operator, the appeal is one power contract instead of a separate PPA and utility relationship.

Engie North America has signed a 48MW solar power purchase agreement with QTS covering the data center operator's campus in Irving, Texas. The deal was struck alongside a separate PPA between Engie and Abei Energy, under which Engie secured capacity from Abei's 61MW Lubio Solar project in Kaufman County, Texas. Data Center Dynamics reported the agreements.

The two-contract structure gives QTS a single retail relationship: Engie supplies the power, and Engie has separately contracted with Abei for the generation. That means the renewable asset and the retail delivery sit in the same contract, which is what Travis Wright, QTS's VP of energy and sustainability, described as 'reliable, renewable energy procurement while simplifying delivery through our retail supply arrangement.' Taymur Bunkheila, Engie's regional VP for key accounts and energy+, framed it as a customized solution that 'seamlessly combine[s] renewable generation with retail power supply.'

For a data center operator, the appeal is one power contract instead of a separate PPA and utility relationship. For Engie, it is a way to tie a specific solar project to a specific load, with the retail agreement as the delivery mechanism.

The 13MW remainder

The numbers leave a gap. Lubio Solar's capacity is 61MW, and the QTS PPA is 48MW. The remaining 13MW is not mentioned in the announcement as going to another buyer. That doesn't mean it won't find one — the announcement is a snapshot, not a final capital stack — but it does mean the project isn't fully contracted as disclosed. Abei holds the other side of the equation, and how it places that residual output will determine whether Lubio reaches construction without further offtake.

For QTS, the 48MW is measurable against the site. The Irving property at 6431 Longhorn Drive spans 55 acres and offers 147MW of capacity across three buildings. The PPA supplies roughly one-third of the campus's design load. QTS also operates data centers in Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Dallas, so this contract adds a renewable layer to a state-wide footprint.

The timeline stretches into 2028. Lubio is expected to complete in April 2028 and connect to the ERCOT grid. That is a three-year forward commitment from today. For a data center operator, locking in power prices now is a hedge against expected load growth and Texas power costs. For Engie, it is a test of whether its integrated retail-plus-generation pitch can work at this scale.

Engie brings a data center client list that includes Meta, Google, and Amazon. That history suggests the structure has legs. Data center PPAs have become a common fixture across the sector, and the product Engie is offering here — generation and retail supply in one contract — shortens the procurement chain for a buyer that doesn't want to manage a separate PPA and utility relationship.

The 13MW says more than the 48MW. It's the piece that will be watched. It may be kept by Abei for merchant sale, or it might go to another off-taker. But the announcement leaves it open. Contracted revenue is what a developer pledges to a construction lender, and with 48MW under contract, Lubio has part of what it needs. The rest is yet to be assembled.
