Prometheus Hyperscale has dropped a 1.2GW data center campus near Casper, Wyoming, a project announced in October 2025.
Prometheus told WyoFile it will not pursue a data center project in Natrona or Converse Counties, Data Center Dynamics reported, citing the Casper Star Tribune, WyoFile and Oil City News. "After spending a great deal of time evaluating the opportunity, we have decided to not pursue a data center project in Natrona or Converse Counties," Prometheus Hyperscale president Trevor Neilson told WyoFile. The 940-acre development had Prometheus working alongside Spiritus and Casper Carbon Capture, with gas-fired power from Spiritus affiliate Orchard Power and carbon capture from Casper Carbon Capture.
Allocators underwriting the campus now face a different counterparty. Falls Ranch, the limited partnership that owns the land and is controlled by Texas billionaire Russell Gordy, said "work will continue without delay" through a new development company.
As recently as September, Prometheus was still in discussions with local officials and had not filed for building permits. The first phase had originally been due online this year.
Natrona County officials told local press they learned of the cancellation through media reports and were surprised. "I don't see the Natrona County government as being a deciding factor for them to pull out, but I don't know," commission chairman Jim Milne told WyoFile. "I'm just kind of disappointed, and I'd highly encourage them to reconsider if they have a future project or change their minds and reconsider Natrona County."
Justin Farley, chief executive of economic development organization Advance Casper, told Oil City News: "Fortunately, we have other developers that have properties under option in Natrona County." A Change.org petition against the project had gathered more than 900 signatures, according to Data Center Dynamics.
In August, Prometheus had announced a potential partnership with Mesa Power Solutions for on-site generation at the campus. Sourcing power on the site rather than solely through the interconnection queue is the subject Private Infrastructure Daily described in August, when supply for large loads became a capital-markets question as much as a utility one.
Falls Ranch's statement keeps the 940 acres in play. The open term is which power and carbon-capture partners carry over under a new developer.
