OpenZeppelin and T-REX introduce OnchainID v3 for regulated tokens

The redesign adds modular smart accounts but requires fresh deployments, so existing 2.x identities cannot be upgraded in place, according to the project's changelog.

At a glance

  1. For anyone already running a permissioned token, though, the line that matters sits in the changelog the outlet cites: the redesign requires new deployments rather than in-place upgrades of existing 2.x identities.
  2. Eligibility decides who is permitted to hold; recovery gives an issuer a path back to tokens whose holder can no longer act on them, and both sit upstream of the allowlists and transfer restrictions that regulated issuers write into their contracts.
  3. The deployment clause is the interesting half of the announcement: a version that cannot be applied in place implies new contract addresses, and a token whose rules point at an older identity deployment keeps pointing there until its issuer chooses to move.

OpenZeppelin and T-REX Network have introduced OnchainID v3, a framework for regulated token eligibility and recovery that adds modular smart accounts, according to The Defiant. For anyone already running a permissioned token, though, the line that matters sits in the changelog the outlet cites: the redesign requires new deployments rather than in-place upgrades of existing 2.x identities.

Eligibility decides who is permitted to hold; recovery gives an issuer a path back to tokens whose holder can no longer act on them, and both sit upstream of the allowlists and transfer restrictions that regulated issuers write into their contracts. That is why a regulated token does not behave like a bearer asset, and why a new version of the identity layer is a new version of the component every downstream control references.

The deployment clause is the interesting half of the announcement: a version that cannot be applied in place implies new contract addresses, and a token whose rules point at an older identity deployment keeps pointing there until its issuer chooses to move. For a large issuer that is a migration project with legal review attached; for a smaller one it is an argument for waiting, and both are reasons the modular smart accounts, however useful, do not arrive for free.

How much that costs depends on who needs to move, because tokenized products have been shifting from issuance into balance-sheet plumbing — equity tokens pledged in offshore lending markets, daily-NAV wrappers on venture exposure, transfer-control upgrades on the interoperability layer — and every one of those products leans on eligibility and identity. This publication has argued that the milestone for tokenization is circulation rather than issuance: whether tokenized supply can be pledged as collateral and settled under a regulator's scrutiny. Collateral that changes hands has to establish who holds it at each step, and a settlement regime with a supervisory audience needs a recovery path that supervisor will accept.

The Defiant's report does not say which issuers have committed to redeploying, or when the first v3 deployments would go live; whether a migration path for the 2.x base appears, or each issuer is left to work one out, is the next thing to look for.
