Only 17% of firms make the referral ask a defined step

F2 Strategy's August survey of 30 firms found new clients drove 63% of organic growth, with referrals as the top tactic.

At a glance

  1. F2 surveyed 30 firms in August, representing about $2.5 trillion in assets.
  2. A practice that writes the ask into its review agenda, with a named person and a logged date, can produce a request count the way it produces a review count; the other 83% cannot.
  3. A June 2026 AssetMark growth assessment of 240 advisors found 93% reported no formal process for generating referrals consistently.

Only 17% of wealth firms make asking for a referral a defined step in their process, even though referrals remain the industry's top growth tactic, according to F2 Strategy's Q3 2026 Trend Report. F2 surveyed 30 firms in August, representing about $2.5 trillion in assets. Fourteen percent fewer firms reported growth of 5% or less than a year earlier; 17% more reported growth in the 6% to 10% range. New client acquisition drove 63% of organic growth, a larger share than added assets from existing clients, InvestmentNews reported. With 30 firms in the sample, the percentages describe a direction more than a census.

Advisor polling finds the same missing step

A June 2026 AssetMark growth assessment of 240 advisors found 93% reported no formal process for generating referrals consistently. The two samples differ—firms in F2's case, individual advisors in AssetMark's—but both locate the gap at the request.

AI is aimed at a step with no script

F2's respondents are pointing AI primarily at prospecting, upselling and cross-selling, and at measuring marketing effectiveness; 81% said it was too early in their AI use to see measurable return on investment. A tool aimed at a funnel with no defined ask has little to convert, and a practice with no written baseline has nothing to compare.

A September 2026 report from Astraeus, produced with Pirker Partners, found firms disclosing meaningful AI use increased total headcount 15% between April 2025 and April 2026, against 8% at firms that had not adopted the technology. Headcount is a different measure from conversion; F2's figures count assets won, not people added. F2 defines organic growth as net new assets not obtained through mergers or acquisitions, so the metric will register a referral step only after it produces a funded account.
