Onex guides CLO reset AAAs at 117bp, tightest in six months

A reset guide three basis points inside August's fresh-issue print says the senior bid has reopened, and the queue that follows will decide who gets it.

At a glance

  1. Creditflux first reported the guide; price talk on the same deal points to tight levels for the junior triple A and mezzanine tranches as well.
  2. Onex spent August repricing seasoned vehicles alongside KKR, Ares and Kennedy Lewis, pushing nearly $2bn of US CLO resets through the market; managers reset when today's spreads beat what their vehicles already pay, so a senior guide this tight says the gap has been wide enough to justify the legal bills.
  3. A reset reissues an existing CLO's notes at current spreads and extends the reinvestment window, which is why they come in waves: the cost is administrative and the saving runs to the equity holders who keep the residual.

Onex is guiding the triple As on the reset of OCP CLO 2024-35 at SOFR plus 117 basis points, the narrowest AAA guide on a reset in six months, and expects to price in early October. Creditflux first reported the guide; price talk on the same deal points to tight levels for the junior triple A and mezzanine tranches as well.

That guide sits three basis points inside the 120bp at which Neuberger priced a $508m CLO in August, close enough that the direction is the point, and it lands mid-wave rather than ahead of one. A reset reissues an existing CLO's notes at current spreads and extends the reinvestment window, which is why they come in waves: the cost is administrative and the saving runs to the equity holders who keep the residual. For a manager weighing whether to reprice now or let the vehicle run off, the senior guide is what decides.

The senior triple A is the easiest tranche to quote and the thinnest source of information, since accounts at that level are buying a spread over a benchmark rather than taking a view on loans; the mezzanine carries that view. Tight talk there says investors are being asked to underwrite collateral risk at a price consistent with benign default expectations, and if the talk is where the deal prints, they are leaning in.

Private credit managers will read the senior end first, because the bid a reset AAA meets is the same broad buyer base a private credit CLO faces at the top of its own stack; a six-month tight in broadly syndicated paper points the way for senior liability pricing this autumn rather than setting a direct comparison, since the collateral and the structures differ. For anyone raising against a CLO strategy, the reset tape is the cleanest public read on structured-credit demand, and it does not wait on an allocator's calendar.

At 117bp, any manager holding a reset-eligible vehicle should be in front of its arranging bank now rather than waiting for a tighter guide, because the binding constraint is not demand at this level — it is how many resets clear before the October window crowds and the marginal buyer reprices wider. Onex prices first, and the next reset to guide, at, through, or wide of 117, is the one that sets the pace.
