At SpaceX's Oct. 16 close of $146.03, one share for each of just over 72 million Americans under 18 would total roughly $10.5 billion, using Census Bureau figures. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband previously committed to fund a share for each of more than 2 million children through Trump Accounts.

Tim Brown of Mission Wealth and Michael Pumphrey of Tanglewood Total Wealth Management favor diversified funds over a single stock as a first holding for children. Brown sees a single stock as a good entry point but a poor foundation and suggests adding diversified funds as gifts and savings grow. Pumphrey would start children in broad, diversified funds. For families, the split frames a practical choice when heirs get a first holding: a single stock as a teaching tool, or diversified funds from the start.
