MSCI puts a product operator atop its ESG business

Kim's résumé is a build-and-ship record, and the slot MSCI gave her says where the firm thinks the margin sits.

At a glance

  1. Earlier stops were product development roles at Fitch and Moody's, and she has built a first-generation sustainability data suite inside a ratings-and-data firm once already.
  2. If that reading is right, the differentiator moves to what a vendor can put in front of a portfolio manager — coverage, refresh speed, how much of the analysis arrives already done — and those are product problems before they are research problems.
  3. MSCI's sustainability head oversees ESG data, ratings and index products that inform sustainable-investing capital allocation, so the job sits across three product lines with three different buying cycles and three different kinds of scrutiny.

MSCI has named Sonia Kim Head of Sustainability, handing the firm's global sustainability business—strategy, product, commercial growth and organizational performance, as described in her profile—to an executive who has spent her career inside product organizations rather than in research, ESG Today reported on 22 September.

The mandate runs through the evolution of MSCI's sustainability intelligence and analytics offering, which her background frames as a push to combine data, research, technology and AI into products sold to financial institutions and corporates; announcing the move, Kim said she would work on accelerating innovation, strengthening the product offering, deepening client partnerships, and bringing data, analytics, technology and AI together so clients can make better investment decisions.

She arrives from GHGSat, the emissions monitoring company, where she was chief product officer and led global product strategy, after running global product at S&P Global's sustainability unit, Sustainable1 — a tenure the account of her career ties to the development and launch of that unit's first sustainability and climate data suite. Earlier stops were product development roles at Fitch and Moody's, and she has built a first-generation sustainability data suite inside a ratings-and-data firm once already.

That résumé reads as a deliberate choice of operator over methodologist, and it lands in a part of the market where the rules are about to get more legible; the regime that begins with the 2 November filing deadline removes a conflict investors could plainly see without doing much to lift standards, because competition among providers has not held that floor. If that reading is right, the differentiator moves to what a vendor can put in front of a portfolio manager — coverage, refresh speed, how much of the analysis arrives already done — and those are product problems before they are research problems.

MSCI's sustainability head oversees ESG data, ratings and index products that inform sustainable-investing capital allocation, so the job sits across three product lines with three different buying cycles and three different kinds of scrutiny. Kim's tenure also begins against a run of senior turnover: our tracking logs two other MSCI executive changes in the five weeks before this one, on 22 August and 8 September.

The test is what ships. The next two quarters of releases will show whether the sustainability unit's output looks like workflow a client buys to do a job, or another layer of scores stacked on data the client already has.
