At a glance

  1. Underlying revenue across the group grew 5% in the quarter ended Sept. 30, the same numerical rate as the organic growth Aon and WTW each reported for the second quarter.
  2. For allocators holding cat bonds or ILS funds, the reinsurance line is the closest read on reinsurance purchasing in these results, and it is an incomplete one.
  3. Reinsurance revenue fell 6% on both a reported and underlying basis, and underlying revenue for the unit was down 1% over the first nine months of 2026.

Marsh's reinsurance business reported a 6% fall in third-quarter revenue to $374 million, on both a reported and underlying basis, while group revenue rose 8% to $6.9 billion, Insurance Business America reported.

Underlying revenue across the group grew 5% in the quarter ended Sept. 30, the same numerical rate as the organic growth Aon and WTW each reported for the second quarter. Gallagher reported 6% organic growth across its combined brokerage and risk-management businesses in that period, and the report notes the comparisons span different quarters and company-defined measures. Adjusted earnings per share rose 10% to $2.03; GAAP operating income rose 4% to $1.2 billion and adjusted operating income rose 6% to $1.5 billion.

For allocators holding cat bonds or ILS funds, the reinsurance line is the closest read on reinsurance purchasing in these results, and it is an incomplete one. The release did not explain the 6% decline, so nothing in it separates lower ceded volume from softer pricing or from the timing of placements. Each would arrive at a broker as lower revenue, and each points to a different conclusion about the capacity behind those notes. That makes the quarter a reason to interrogate a manager's view of reinsurance pricing and demand, not evidence for any one explanation.

What the release does and does not break out

Reinsurance revenue fell 6% on both a reported and underlying basis, and underlying revenue for the unit was down 1% over the first nine months of 2026. At $374 million the unit is about 5% of group revenue. It sits inside Risk and Insurance Services, which generated $4.2 billion, up 7% reported and 3% underlying; segment operating income fell 1% to $745 million and adjusted operating income rose 4% to $1 billion.

Marsh Risk, the larger piece of that segment, posted $3.7 billion, up 10% reported and 5% underlying. Underlying growth was 4% in the US and Canada and 6% internationally, with EMEA at 7%, Asia Pacific at 4% and Latin America flat.

Consulting covers the gap

Consulting supplied the offset. Segment revenue rose 9% to $2.7 billion, or 8% underlying, with operating income up 12% to $563 million and adjusted operating income up 9% to $593 million. Management Consulting, formerly Oliver Wyman Group, generated $1 billion, up 14% on both a reported and underlying basis. People and Investments, formerly Mercer, reported $1.7 billion, up 6% overall and 5% underlying.

"Marsh delivered a strong third quarter, generating 5% underlying revenue growth and double-digit EPS growth," said John Doyle, president and CEO. He also cited progress on the company's Thrive program and what he called a successfully completed brand transition; the same results carry the new segment names, with Oliver Wyman Group now Management Consulting and Mercer now People and Investments.

Set against the group, the reinsurance decline is small: a 6% drop from the year-earlier quarter implies about $24 million less revenue, roughly 0.3% of the $6.9 billion total, small enough that the group still grew 8%. The nine-month underlying figure, down 1%, is the longest period the report gives for the unit.
