JetZero lands $100M secured loan for blended-wing jet

A senior secured facility from Pinegrove and Silicon Valley Bank ties capital to program milestones, the shape of transition finance after the label.

At a glance

  1. The company says the design cuts fuel burn and emissions by up to 50% compared with conventional tube-and-wing aircraft.
  2. Founded in 2021, JetZero is blending wings and fuselage into a single shape to reduce drag.
  3. Lenders are Pinegrove Credit Partners, backed by Brookfield and HRTG Partners, and Silicon Valley Bank, a division of First-Citizens Bank; ESG Today does not report pricing, maturity, or other terms.

JetZero, a California aerospace startup, has closed a senior secured term loan facility of up to $100 million to advance its blended-wing aircraft program, according to ESG Today. The company says the design cuts fuel burn and emissions by up to 50% compared with conventional tube-and-wing aircraft.

Founded in 2021, JetZero is blending wings and fuselage into a single shape to reduce drag. Its Z4 aircraft, sized for the middle market, would carry about 250 passengers up to 5,000 nautical miles with larger seats and wider aisles and is expected to enter service in the early 2030s. The company says the airframe is compatible with sustainable aviation fuel and current airport infrastructure.

Lenders are Pinegrove Credit Partners, backed by Brookfield and HRTG Partners, and Silicon Valley Bank, a division of First-Citizens Bank; ESG Today does not report pricing, maturity, or other terms. Proceeds will speed technology maturation and manufacturing of Jet1—the full-scale demonstrator 40% complete as of June 2026 and scheduled for first flight in the fourth quarter of 2027—support the buildout of JetZero's U.S. manufacturing and test facilities in Greensboro, North Carolina, and provide working capital for U.S. operations. JetZero broke ground on the Greensboro factory in June and says it will create more than 14,000 jobs over the next decade; Jet1 is being built with Scaled Composites, a Northrop Grumman company.

The structure matters as much as the size. The facility is senior secured, and Pinegrove partner Craig Caukin said it was built 'around the program's real milestones'—covenant-driven pricing rather than a green label, with the credibility battle now over execution, the argument of 'materiality-first bar for transition plans.' The deal also fits the move of energy transition capital into private hands tracked in August. For a startup whose aircraft has yet to fly, a secured loan tied to milestones is a different instrument from a labeled bond.

For JetZero, the loan bridges demonstration and production; for transition finance, it tests whether lenders can underwrite an unproven airframe with the discipline they apply to a power plant. The first flight in 2027 will show whether the milestones held and whether the next round of capital is cheaper or dearer.
