India's DPI pressure is the GP-led desk's next pipeline

Panelists at a Hong Kong private equity forum expect secondaries exits to precede Indian fundraises, sending supply to buyers who price off sponsor marks.

At a glance

  1. Seen from a buyer's desk, that is pipeline: a GP that hands LPs cash out of an older vintage walks into its next raise with a figure on the page instead of a mark, and in a fundraising meeting that difference is worth more than the discount paid to produce it.
  2. A GP selling ahead of a fundraise is negotiating against a date, and a sponsor on a date has less appetite for the diligence, the LPAC convening and the long exclusivity a discounted secondary normally requires.
  3. The India read carries weight because secondaries capital has outgrown vanilla deal flow, as this publication has argued, pushing buyers toward less-covered markets and past plain purchases into NAV facilities and other financing workarounds.

More Indian GPs will turn to secondaries exits to generate DPI before raising their next fund, panelists said at the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association's Asia Private Equity Forum 2025, as Secondaries Investor reported. Seen from a buyer's desk, that is pipeline: a GP that hands LPs cash out of an older vintage walks into its next raise with a figure on the page instead of a mark, and in a fundraising meeting that difference is worth more than the discount paid to produce it. The coverage names no vehicle, no process and no buyer; the likeliest shape is GP-led, since the seller being described is the sponsor rather than a liquidity-pressed LP.

That makes the seller's calendar the buyer's real counterparty. A GP selling ahead of a fundraise is negotiating against a date, and a sponsor on a date has less appetite for the diligence, the LPAC convening and the long exclusivity a discounted secondary normally requires. The terms that will decide these processes are the ones this desk always watches: how much of the book rolls, whether the GP commits its own money, and how far the new money's entry price sits below the last reported mark. A buyer who files the fundraise timetable as background rather than as a term is underwriting someone else's deadline.

The India read carries weight because secondaries capital has outgrown vanilla deal flow, as this publication has argued, pushing buyers toward less-covered markets and past plain purchases into NAV facilities and other financing workarounds. A market whose GPs reach the secondaries window mainly because they need distributions is a market where the buy side sets fewer of the terms, which suggests price discovery that would normally happen between competing buyers happens instead inside the sponsor's fundraising arithmetic.

An Indian GP-led process landing this year, struck at marks the sponsor set and sized to close a DPI gap, would show how far this travels from a panel stage to a signed deal.
