ICG's Europe Fund IX hits €12bn hard cap

New investors supplied the larger share of a fund already a fifth deployed.

At a glance

  1. New money outdrew old by about €800m, at an average new ticket near €74m, and the fund was already 22 per cent deployed across six investments.
  2. At nine vintages deep, renewal is not what carried this fund.
  3. The deployment is also a statement about product design: roughly €2.6bn across six investments puts the average position near €440m, and if that pacing holds the remaining €9.4bn will go into a comparable number of large financings rather than scattered across dozens of credits.

ICG has closed its ninth European corporate fund at the €12bn hard cap, an oversubscribed raise 50 per cent larger than its immediate predecessor, with roughly €6.7bn from about 90 new limited partners and €5.9bn from returning investors, according to Alternative Credit Investor. New money outdrew old by about €800m, at an average new ticket near €74m, and the fund was already 22 per cent deployed across six investments.

At nine vintages deep, renewal is not what carried this fund. ICG is expanding its constituency beyond investors already in earlier vintages, and chief executive Benoît Durteste, who also serves as chief investment officer, described the backers as a “growing and sophisticated base of LPs” whose support reflects “significant conviction” in the flexible capital strategy ICG pioneered.

The deployment is also a statement about product design: roughly €2.6bn across six investments puts the average position near €440m, and if that pacing holds the remaining €9.4bn will go into a comparable number of large financings rather than scattered across dozens of credits. No fund reaches 22 per cent deployed by formal close without originations running ahead of the paperwork, which means this capital was raised against assets ICG already wanted to hold rather than as a blank cheque.

The corporate fund sits inside a wider platform of about $126bn across structured capital, private equity secondaries, private debt, credit and real assets. Europe Fund IX is, by ICG's own description, the largest dedicated structured capital fund raised globally, though that superlative comes from the announcement rather than an independent ranking and deserves to be held at arm's length.

The €9.4bn not yet deployed will now test that design at the same pace, and the ordinary test remains whether positions averaging €440m earn the conviction those cheques expressed.
