Hitachi Energy, Ansaldo sign non-binding data center power MoU

The memorandum pairs Ansaldo's gas turbines with Hitachi Energy's grid integration for 50Hz and 60Hz markets, with no capacity or timetable attached.

At a glance

  1. The agreement, reported by Data Center Dynamics on Oct. 21, pairs Ansaldo Energia's gas-turbine and generator technology with Hitachi Energy's grid integration work.
  2. The MoU commits neither company to deliver equipment, and the Data Center Dynamics report attaches no capacity figure, order value or schedule.
  3. For wealth allocators with data-center or grid exposure, the concrete diligence question is whether the turbine and transformer supply behind a project comes with firm orders and delivery dates.

Hitachi Energy and Ansaldo Energia signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to develop combined gas-turbine and grid power systems for data centers and other large electricity users.

The agreement, reported by Data Center Dynamics on Oct. 21, pairs Ansaldo Energia's gas-turbine and generator technology with Hitachi Energy's grid integration work. The companies said they intend to build an end-to-end system running from generation through transmission to the point of consumption, covering energy hubs, data centers and other large-scale consumers. The systems are designed to serve both 60Hz and 50Hz markets.

The MoU commits neither company to deliver equipment, and the Data Center Dynamics report attaches no capacity figure, order value or schedule.

For wealth allocators with data-center or grid exposure, the concrete diligence question is whether the turbine and transformer supply behind a project comes with firm orders and delivery dates. That matters most for vehicles underwriting time to power, because the equipment chain is where that interval can stretch.

Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck said demand continues to outpace available infrastructure and that combining the two firms' capabilities would help customers "accelerate time to power." Ansaldo Energia CEO Fabrizio Fabbri said meeting electricity demand "requires closer collaboration across the entire energy value chain."

Hitachi also said the partnership would support autonomous, integrated operation of data centers through One Hitachi, combining its power systems with HMAX Data Center. Data Center Dynamics described HMAX as a domain-specific suite that integrates monitoring and correlation analysis across multi-vendor power, IT and cooling infrastructure.

The Data Center Dynamics report names no projects under the memorandum, so the next checkpoint is whether the MoU produces named sites with equipment orders.
